Issue50：In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach.
Should the faculty of the college spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach? In my view, it is an effective way to improve their expertise and the quality of instruction, because the development of science and technology needs more cross disciplinary knowledge rather than the knowledge of a single field.
For the purpose of improving their expertise, the faculty should spend some time on other relevant fields. We are in a digital time today, which is also a so called knowledge explosion time. The fast development of science and technology has greatly changed our lives. For example, the invention of the internet has changed our way of getting the knowledge, you can get any information by a computer connected to the internet, and it also makes the information exchanging more convenient, as a result the cross discipline becomes more and more important. In order to keep abreast with the time, the faculty should pay attention to some relevant fields and spend some time on them; this will enrich their own expert knowledge and realize their self-improvements. It also helps the faculty on their research works. Experience of the other field can give a counterpart to the faculty’s own fields, the similar experience of different fields will enlighten researchers’ inspiration, to avoid making the similar failures of the other field.
Considering the benefits to the students, it is also necessary for the faculty to spend time on the outside academic world. The problems facing the human society today need to be solved by knowledge of different fields. Take the environmental problem as an example, the development of the science and technology not only brings us more food ,clothes and better medical care, but also pollution and a lot of diseases. To improve the environment, you need to know knowledge of different fields like Chemistry, Physics, and economics. It needs the cooperation of experts of different areas, which means the expert of one field should at lease know the basic knowledge of the other field in order to avoid unnecessary damage he might make. The development of cross discipline also makes their contribution to such a demand. For example, the physical Chemistry course needs the students to master the knowledge of both Physics and Chemistry. The faculty who has multi knowledge about the course can give his students a multi viewpoint to that course. As the students get the knowledge, they also get the way of thinking from different aspects.
To sum up, it is always good for the faculty to spend time on other fields relevant to the courses they teach, for the benefits to both the faculty themselves and the students are obvious.
