TOPIC: ISSUE43 - "To be an effective leader, a public official must maintain the highest ethical and moral standards."

The moral and ethic of a leader is often concerned by the public. In my view, I'm firmly confirmed that in order to lead his group effectively, a public official must maintain high ethical and moral standards; however, the highest standards are not necessary.

To begin with, the maintenance of high ethical and moral standards is the necessary condition for one to be elected as leaders. In any democratic society, publics are given the right to choose the one who they think could bring prosperity and safe to them. It's human nature that we always choose those we think reliable. Without high ethical and moral standards, one can not be trusted by the publics and there is no way for them to obtain the position as a leader. Even those having great powers might be asked to resign if he fails to maintain the high moral standards. For instance, Richard Nixon was in trouble after he was found to abuse his position as the American president to obtain the unjust interests for his party. The publics no long trusted him. At last, under the great pressure from the public, Nixon had to give up his power.

In addition, to be an effective leader, one must have the ability to inspire his group members to support him; only those leaders with high ethical and moral standard will be followed by others voluntarily. Take Martin Luther King for example. If King could not keep loyalty to his faith or he betrayed his group to obtain individual interests or gave up after the death threat, no body would think King is the right person to lead them to the success of their fighting for the race equality. Without the supports from the publics who trusted him, King would not realize his great ideal.

Furthermore, an effective leader must have that courage to give up individual interests when the benefits of his group conflict with his personal benefits. Only those who maintain high ethical and moral standard can always make the best choice for his group. Suppose that one as a senior manager of a company. He knows much about the company's market strategy and business secrets. Meanwhile, another company offers a high price to the manager for what he knows. If the manager is a greedy person and consider more about his individual interests, he might choose to sacrifice his group's benefits to sell his company's business secrets. These kinds of persons can never be thought as effective by his group members.

However, there is no need for effective leaders to maintain the highest ethical and moral standards. On one hand, no one is perfect. Sometimes small flaws in moral don't harm the competence of the leaders. Bill Clinton, who has the sex scandal, is still to be considered as one of the most successful presidents in US history for he brings the greatest economic advancement after World War II. On the other hand, the leaders with the highest moral standards might harm the efficiency of his group. It's difficult for this kind of leaders to abide others' ethical flaws, no matter how small the flaws might be. Nevertheless, there are always some flaws on someone and it's common for one to be jealous or a little greedy. If employees are always blamed for those ethical flaws on them, they might feel uncomfortable to continue to work with their leaders and choose to leave. Without group members to support him, how could a leader to be effective?

In summary, the maintenance of high ethical and moral standards is an essential character for those effective leaders and helps them obtain supports from his group members. Nevertheless, the highest standards are not necessary and even might harm the efficiency of a leader.

coherent and logical看了你的文章,我才知道这两个单词的意思,再看自己文章真的差了好远
时态错误多了点,老美还是很看重时态的^,^

谢谢修改啦。

coherent和logic能突击的,我也是前两天突然开的窍。关键就要不拘泥于文章字数,一个例子越少句子说清楚越好,能用简单词不用复杂词,能用简单句不用复杂句。

写完,发觉我词汇真贫乏,呵呵。
