我晕,这篇粘过来少粘了两段。
嘻嘻,前面这段当第一段看来也不错~
没限时,583字。憋了好久才写出来这篇。
I concede that non-mainstream areas like astrology, fortune-telling, and psyche and paranormal pursuits do serve as some satisfaction to human needs which mainstream science cannot. However, the negative effects they bring to the society and its participants far outweigh the benefits they bring.
It is true that some personal needs cannot be perfectly satisfied by science; and these people with special need often turn to non-mainstream areas. For example, a student, preparing for an important examination and having no confidence in himself, may go to fortune-tellers to pray for some good luck; a merchant man, wanting to do a big investment and having no guidance of which corporation to put money in, also may go to fortune-tellers to find some guidance; even in the past a king, thinking about invading to a country nearby, always turned to astrology for help. Therefore, since we human being are born to face infinite choices to make in our daily lives and we are too fragile of throwbacks, wrongness, frustrations to have confidence in every circumstances to make a choice ourselves, astrology, fortune-telling, and other thing alike indeed do some help to soothe us. And then more heart-touchingly, human being are born to be more sensitive and affectionate than animals; when we lose some intimate friends, partners, parents, we cannot stand up to this trueness but just think of another world or past-life. In this circumstance, psychic and paranormal pursuits just help us, too.
Conceding all these psychological benefactions these non-mainstream areas could bring us, we must also keep aware of they can bring us even greater negative effects either to individual or to the society.
In the first place, it is not a good thing for people do drown in the dark sea of non-mainstream pursuits. These non-mainstream pursuits, contrary to mainstream science, have a distinctive feature that they are not logically reasonable; they don’t have convincing facts or numbers to stick to their conclusion; they are not true and irresponsible in fact. Therefore, once or twice it is not a tremendous bad thing for people to look for psychological calmness from these unusual ways, but in the long run it will lead to people’s self-cheat, people’s insensitiveness to true or false, even people’s psychological disorder and so on. All Chinese people could still remember the tragedy happened in the Tian-an Men plaza several years ago, in which several people, who are fascinated with and believed in some beliefs in this giaour that they can burn themselves to gain some immortality, committed suicide. This tragedy is a typical example of the bad result of fascination with these non-mainstreams.
In the second place, non-mainstream pursuits encumber the society’s improvement. If its people use a lot of money and time in non-mainstream, mainstream science development will be surely affected. Scientific research is like a green grass which hardly grows across the big encumbering stone of non-mainstream to live in the sunshine. Copernicus’ heliocentric theory is just such an advancement; though it at last succeed in fighting against the old religion beliefs, the death of Brussels indeed tells us something about the counteracting effect of the non-mainstream. Not mentioning the development of science and technology, even in the aspect of society’s safety and peace, the above mentioned China’s giaour is still a threat to a country’s balance and people’s safety.
In sum, I don’t agree with this assertion that non-mainstream play a vital role in the society even though it is to some extent psychological beneficial to some people.
