TOPIC:ISSUE122 - "We owe almost all our knowledge not to people who have agreed,but to people who have disagreed."

Should we owe almost all our knowledge tothe people who have disagreed rather than people who have agreed, as thespeaker claims? I agree with the assertion of the speaker insofar as we canbenefit a lot from people we disagree through discussion and debate. However,we are able to get much knowledge we desire from people who have agreed in somecases, such as moral education and social convention.

In the first place, in human history we canobtain a great deal of knowledge from the people who have different ideas andthoughts from ours in that no one individual can take into account all ofpossibilities about a single problem. For supporting examples, one need look nofurther than the debate between Albert Einstein and Bohr. In that time, therewere a great number of ideas about the quantum theory but none of them couldexplain the phenomena about the light nature, such as the refraction and photoemission. Einstein supported amore determinate theory while Bohr was in favor of the probability-basedtheory. This is the historically famous debate about the determinacy-and-indeterminacyof the quantum theory which was ended by the "chaos theory" based onthe two theories. Therefore, we can indeed obtain some benefits from the peoplehaving different ideas from ours in the controversy and debate in the samefield.

In the second place, people who havedisagreed with us can supply different opinions to inspire or supplement theour ideas which own some flaws and problems. Common sense tells us that oneindividual's idea could be limited by his or her background and knowledge whichcannot be changed greatly in all one's life and thereby we need differentopinions which are from different background or discipline. For instance, themajority of students who major in the civil engineering are not familiar withthe knowledge of economy and law. When they are ambitiously and confidentlyplanning to found a company which supply knowledge about the engineering, hispartners who major in economy or law, as the case may be, propose differentideas about the plan due to the social laws and policies of enterprises. Though the confident students maybe feela little angry and lose-hearted, the advice is so importantand practical that their company will encounter much more obstacles inthe future progress.

It is correct that the opinion from peoplewho have disagreed is significantly important for us, but we still can learnknowledge from the people who have agreed, even more happily and comfortably.

We can own great amounts of knowledge tothe people who have disagreed in that we have the same social convention andstandard. Before the time we learn at school, we have learned some knowledgeabout the social morality and the standards. When we attend the school toreceive the formal education from the professional teachers, we will find thatthe knowledge from the educator is just the same with that from the parents andbe inclined to accept the knowledge naturally, effectively and efficiently.Consequently, when the opinions about the issuesare in the same field and by the same rule, we can actually obtain muchknowledge from the people who have agreed with the same rule or convention.

On the whole, unless the people who havedisagreed, we will not consider the details and flaws of the issuescomprehensively. Unless the people who have agreed, we cannot accept theknowledge which can present us with social convention and moral standardseffectively and efficiently. Thus, we should owe our knowledge to people whohave agreed and equally to people who have disagreed.
