Whether tradition and modernization are incompatible nowadays? The speaker claim so and give a conclusion that we must make a choice between them. Admittedly, we may change attitude to something in tradition with the time, however, if tradition can not be accepted with modernization, we can not see a prosperous and diversified society with voluminous school of art, philosophy, knowledge, which all can not be separated from the contribution of tradition.

When we stand on the historical angle, multitudes kinds of thought, custom, value, belief are handed down from generation to generation and are take an vital role in the modern society. When it comes to custom, in China, spring festival brings all the family members together having meals, charting with each other, setting off firework, which is essential to the harmony of family and can hardly achieved by modernization. When it comes to thought, Socrates, the ancient Greek famous philosopher, define the genuine education to be eliciting knowledge from a person rather than just inserting the stuffing of information into him, which is applied in the modern education. When it comes to religion, Christianism, Islam, Buddhism which are all born long ago still greatly influence people in modern world. History like a merciless filter passes down only the real elite of human civilization, which is of great value to our modern society.

Further, some tradition things improve gradually by the impact of the modern genre and become compatible with the modernization. Especially in the fields like architecture, art and music, which form an all-compassing construction from thousands of years. Impressionism founded by Picasso has been developed into an important genre in the modern art and we can find some modern things with this genre such as advertisement. Further more, because of the intercommunication between modernization and tradition, many different genre can be accepted by people. While classical music and pop music have sharp difference, it dose not matter that both of them give us great pleasure and are widely enjoyed by people from different countries. In fact, tradition and modernization can go along well with each other in many fields and we have no need to make a choice between them.

Admittedly, I concede that something in tradition can not match the modernization or even impede the improvement of society. Discrimination against women, for instance, are broadly accepted as the commonsense in the history. However, in the liberty and equality society, people become aware of the position of women and take measure to raise the position of women. Without giving up the out-of-date view, raising the position of women can never be achieved. Actually, the change of out-of-data idea and attitude in the past is due to change of people's value and ideology with the society stepping forward. Superstition dominant the society in the past and are used by a kind of measure to guard the country because people have little knowledge about the real world and many phenomenon cannot be explained. But with the development of science, many mystery things get the prefect explanation in science and as a result science is widely accepted and people tend to see the world in a scientific way. By contrast, superstition can hardly take its position in the society.

In sum, facing tradition and modernization, wholly accept or wholly reject are not the appropriate attitude. In fact, in our modern society, art, architecture, music and other fields, tradition is embraced, not shunned.
