Artist or critic,who gives lasting value to society?Some asserts that since critic has the ability to pick out outstanding art works,raise the value of one certain art works and feedback to artists so as for them to creat better works.However,I contend that since critic's evaluation is always ego,limited and influenced by other powers,like governments,common taste and publishing company,the critic may only detriment the genuine outstanding works instead of giving society the lasting value of art work.
   
People who are the supporter of critic may asserts that a critic's evaluation of an art work serves as a filter,which has the ability to retain the essence while sift away the dross.I agree with the point only insofar when the critic is not only well educated and informed but also not influenced by other elements like governments,common taste or publishing company.Without the character of profession morality,one can never find an art work with lasting value for the society.The government of The Former Soviet Union is an good paradigmatic example.In that time of one-party-governed situation,the artists received economic supports from government,in turn their works must eulogize the party instead of undermine it,in this example,the government plays the role of an critic,which would never find out the works of lasting value because its egoism and mind-controlling policy.Besides the element of politic,the art critic's judgment is also always limited by the narrow confines of stale and established standards for evaluation,great artists like composer Beethoven,playwright shakespeare,painter Van Gogh,were all heavily denied by contemporary critics.Actually,many artists' masterpieces were even ignored until many years after the death of thier creators.If people follow this bad critics all the time,what a horrible art world we would face nowadays?
   
Some also asserts that critics can enhance the value of art works.However,this assertion is unreasonable as well.art works actually have two kinds of value:substance value and art value.While the substance value is the price one art work can be sold in society,which can be enhanced by the recommendation of critics,the art value is the status an art work can get in the field of art,which is determined since the born of it.Plus,the lasting value are imbodied in the art value of an art work,not the substance value.Consequently,critics have no influence on the lasting value of art works at all.
   
The third point the supporter of critics might assert is that the critics can give evaluation to feed back to the artists,so as to let them improve thier mind and provide more inspiration to the artists.Again,this point is vulnerable,too.The reason why an art work can give society something of lasting value is its originality and uniqueness.A critic's feedback is always concerned about the taste of common people and the contemporary art standards,which are always vulgar and banal.Influeced by this kind of feedbacks,the artists can only improve their works to the standards and common taste,instead of create masterpieces which have ture lasting value.So many contiuations of great movies and novels are much worse than thier previous ones is the best demonstration.
   
In sum,the true and lasting value of art is based on what an artist puts into it and what the viewer takes away from it.It's no need to invlove the critic in it.Virtually,the critics are the production of commerce and politic.It can only boom the art bussiness up temporarily or in some special situations,maintain the stability of a society.Lasting value can and only be created by the great artists,who have minds and ideas of originality and uniqueness.
