TOPIC: ISSUE147 - "Tradition and modernization are incompatible. One must choose between them."
WORDS: 506 TIME: AM 12:45:00 DATE: 2007-3-27
The speaker claims that tradition and modernization are exclusive to each other and the can not coexist. However, as for me , I totally disagree with then speaker's statement by claiming that under most circumstance tradition and modernization can not only coexist but also promote the development of each other.
It goes without saying that with the development of modern science, technology has almost seeped into every corner of the world. which dramatically influences our daily life. Under this situation, the fact that people become more concern about the modernization than tradition is understandable. However people seem to fail to take into account the fact that the culture is the soul of our society, which is largely embodied in the tradition rather than modernization. That would say, we human beings need culture to fulfill our mental needs and add colors to our life, after all, no one would like to live in a society that is full of technology but no culture existing. So, culture, deriving from the tradition makes an indispensable part of our life. To discard tradition would like to discard our soul.
Looked at from another perspective, in modern society we have seen many cases that tradition and modernization join together to form a harmonious life for our human beings. To illustrate it , one needs look no further than the spread of Beijing Opera, which is regarded as one of the most brilliant traditions in the history of China. Modern acoustic and image technology enable the whole world to enjoy this great Chinese art anytime and anywhere. So ,according to this point, we may find that in the preservation and spread of tradition, technology and modernization play a very important role. Similarly, sometimes tradition can provide inspiration to the modernization. Considering the invention of plane as an representative example, the inspiration of this great invention is largely related to the flying kite in the sky. So, in this point, I may safely draw a conclusion that both tradition and modernization benefit each other.
Finally, the society is constantly advancing, updating is the permanent theory of the nature. That is to say, in some cases tradition should give the place to modernization. It is known to all that modernization is the ultimate impetus of the development of the society, without modernization, we may still live in the primitive age. With regard to this aspect, when we face the conflict of tradition and modernization, what make more sense is to achieve a balance between them. Consider the construction of the city as an example, in order to construct a building for the people who have no house to live, some traditional houses must be destroyed. When it comes to this situation, tradition should give place to the modernization, because addressing this urgent social problem is of more value than protecting these old houses.
In sum, tradition and modernization can be compatible in most cases, and they can benefit each other in some aspects. What we should do is to achieve a balance between tradition and modernization
