题目:ISSUE185 - "Scandals-whether in politics, academia, or other areas-can be useful. They focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could."
字数:502 用时:0:39:42 日期:2007-3-31
It is generally acknowledge that scandals attrcat much more attention than normal accident. They focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could. However, we can not draw a conclusion that we may benefit from scandals in any event, somtimes scandals can distract our attention from the the key of the problem.
No one can deny that scandals play an important and essential role in some political accident. The Nixon's Watergate Affair is a classic instance in political realm. Withourt that the scandals had surfaced, the public could not pay much attention to the political problems from speakers and reforms. In the economic realm, a good example is the financial scandal of the AA company, which was one of the world " BIG FIVE" accounting firm companies. Thus, the problems of the world financial system are well considered by the public. Another example is the scandal of the footbal corruption, so-called "Black Whistle" in China, which is not made much account of before. Now the "Black whistle" has drawn increasing attention. Judging from above examples, we can conclude that scandals are sometimes very useful to politics and society, which can focus more attentions on problems and help to solve the problems. Scandals can give an impetus to social reforms. Fear of scandals can force a goverment or a political party to improve its public performance.
Admittedly, scandals sometimes have positive effect on problems, however, scandals can also distract people's attention from the real problem which needs to be solved. The famous sex scandal of former president of American Bill Clinton is a case in point. Although Clintion is guilty in morality, the scandal is only the privacy of the former president. Futhermore, the large amount of the public resource which are spent on probing the intimate details between Clintom and Lewinsky are wasted by Starr. The funds would be more beneficial to world if they could be spent in helping the sick children in the Africa of otherwise be used for addressing the problems of the environment pollution and unemployment in America. Take another example, the current president Bush, start the war against the Iraq, distract the attention from his inaction on nation's economy. We can not outweigh the benefit of the scandals, thus, it is very government's responsibility to avoid the neagtive effect on problems.
Every coins have two sides. Media converage of scandals is the most effective way to draw the public attention to certian social problem. Numerous examples in history indicate that exposing a scandal often contributes to a social effort to solve th exposed problem. But we should take not disadvatage of the scandals, scandals should be controlled under the government and media's supervision.
In sum, on the one hand, scandals somtimes can help focus our attention on problems, on the other, scandals will distract our attention from the real problems which need to be solved. It is recommand that we take advantange of the scandals to make more benefit to our society. |
