Some old people are oppressed by the fear of death. In the young there is a justification for this feeling.
Young men who have reason to fear that they will be killed in battle may justifiably feel bitter in the thought
that they have been cheated of the best things that life has to offer. But in an old man who has known human
joys and sorrows, and has achieved whatever work it was in him to do, the fear of death is somewhat abject
and ignoble. The best way to overcome it-so at least it seems to me----is to make your interests gradually wider
and more impersonal, until bit by bit the walls of the ego recede, and your life becomes increasingly merged in
the universal life. An individual human existence should be like a river--small at first, narrowly contained
within its banks, and rushing passionately past boulders and over waterfalls. Gradually the river grows
wider ,the banks recede, the waters flow more quietly, and in the end, without any visible break, they become
merged in the sea, and painlessly lose their individual being. The man who, in old age, can see his life in this
way, will not suffer from the fear of death, since the things he cares for will continue. And it, with the decay of
vitality, weariness increases, the thought of rest will be not unwelcome. I should wish to die while still at work,
knowing that others will carry on what I can no longer do, and content in the thought that what was possible
has been done.

第15课 Secrecy in industry

In this article, it discusses that secrecy in industry is one of the factors which weigh heavily against the effectiveness of scientific research. In so far as any inquiry is a secret one, it limits all those who engaged in carrying it out from effective contact with their fellow scientists in other countries or universities, or even in other departments of the same firm. The degree of secrecy varies considerably. Some researches of general and fundamental nature are preferred not to be kept secret. Yet a great many processes are to be patented or be kept as secret processes. This is particularly true in chemical industry, where chance discoveries play a much larger part than they do in physical or mechanical industry. This article also takes an example of extreme secrecy that some firms are unwilling to take books out of libraries just for the fear that other company could trace the kind of their research by the borrowing record.

Civilized men enjoy the comfort and luxury of skyscrpers, as well as endure the toxic fumes and noises from modern transportation. In a modern city, the living necessity is completely neglected.

Lesson 17 A man-made disease
This article may be taken as an essay about the effects between human beings and the nature. Sometime unconsciously people bring troubles to the environment. Meanwhile, they should taste the fruits of the change. The first Australian immigrant took European rabbits to the oceanire continent, without noticing that there are no natural enemies of rabbits. When rabbits mutiplied at a surprisingly speed, the competion of herbage arose between these rabbits and the cattle, and the burrowing caused devastation to the soil. As scientists discovered a mosquito could be the carrier of a fatal virus only to rabbits, people in Austrialian began to encouraging this, which seemed odd to the rest of the world. At present the problem of rabbits would become manageable, although rabbits have developed a resistance to the disease.

A similar example took place in Europe. A French physician introduced the disease to get rid of wild rabbits in his estate, but failed to confine it. Unfortunately, this epidemic spreaded not only in France but in England, in which rabbits can be taken as food or made a profit. Human beings often do something unwise, and sometimes they do other things fool to make up the mistake.

Lesson 18 Porpoises

In this article, it reveals the secret that porpoises protected and saved human beings in the sea. It is because of the curiosity rather than consciousness. As an example, the picture that dolphin push a mattress ashore for fun has even been taken. Just as natural enemies, porpoises and sharks may encounter and ensue a battle, while sometimes the drown human beings are the lure.

Live things, such as bird, fish, or beast, always fascinate dolphin. In aquarium, two porpoises often play a game with tortoise. When the play is going on, the two porpoises would attack the sea turtle on its belly in turn to the bottom. Finally the poor turtle has to surrender and pull it feet under its shell.

This article introduces the idea that porpoises pull drown human beings ashore or raise them out of the sea with their snout just for fun or curiosity.

NCE4-19 The stuff of dreams
This article talks about something of sleeping and dreams, such as the function, the activity, and so on. Since sleeping is necessary for everybody, there is so much of it the function would seem to be important. The nature of sleeping is far more than rest, since rest can be achieved by lying or sitting down in terms of muscle relaxation. The body’s tissues are self-repairing and self-restoring to a degree, and function best when more or less continuously active. To prevent muscle inactivity when sleeping, the body should be in a basic movement.
There is some speculation that sleeping might be the rest of brain. But experiments do not support this hypothesis. First, the electroencephalograph shows that there is no evidence of reducing activity when sleeping, although there exists a change. Second, dreams have more effects on people than sleep. The movements of eyes might be the signs of dreams when sleeping. Contractive experiments have been carried out that one group of people was woken up from their eyes movement, while others not. Only the group of people exhibits the disorder of personality. These experiments show that the disturbance of dreaming affects people, rather the disturbance of sleeping.
