------题目------
Rituals and ceremonies help define a culture. Without them, societies or groups of people have a diminished sense of who they are.
------正文------
In modern life, rituals and ceremonies is some characterization of a culture, especially the religion. And it is true helpful in defining such a culture. Admittedly, the advocators of such culture will have a diminished sense of who they are if without such things. However, in other cases, the rituals and ceremonies do not play such an important role for many types of culture are not in such form.
To begin with, when it comes to the religion, rituals and ceremonies are the major form to show such culture. The people advocating such cultures are no doubt regarding such things as a part of their life, without which they may feel they are living meaningless. Take Christianity for example, every week, its believers will have a ritual called worship, by which way they believe they can have a connect with their father in heaven, and they also clean their heart to not to be earthly. Another example is about followers of Islamism. Many followers spend their whole life on having a ceremony--pilgrimage, which is a difficult and not easy reaching thing to other people but not them, that that they walk to the Holy Land-- Mecca through a long distant from their born place, that may take 10 years, and even more. To such people, such ceremonies are something necessary to be done since they are born. If losing such ceremonies, they may find they are nothing at all.
Yet, except the religion, other cultures do not have such rituals, but with some other forms which help its people having a sense of who they are. In science, the scientists are well defined by the scientific culture--objective, reality, mystery. They never feel alone for that they know where they are, how they come, and what they should do. By such a clear recognizing of themselves and the world, they would not have such a diminished sense of who they are. In art, the similar thing happens as the science. Artists are musing in the perfect articles and have a look at the world and themselves in their special aspects. They also will not lose themselves, since their culture help them to better define themselves.
Then consider the culture of country. For example, in American its Liberty and equality is the major content of the culture. When people are in such a society, rituals and ceremonies will not be important, in that such forms are limiting them in action and defying their culture of liberty. Moreover, in our country-China, it is the peace and philanthropy that fills in the culture. Such content teach its people know well about the bad affection of wars and the good affection of kindness. In such culture, it is difficult to find some rituals and ceremonies but the people do keep their minds of who they are for this culture well helps them define.
In sum, cultures are various and different. When considering the religion, rituals and ceremonies may help define the culture as the major forms, and people with such culture will have diminished sense of who they are without such forms. But, when it comes to other culture, it has little to do with culture. Other cultures are defined in their way and people will not be affected whether the ceremonies exist or not. |
