Going Under Hypnosis Before Going Into Surgery

Turns out that hypnosis, once thought to be a hocus pocus parlor trick, may now be considered a legitimate surgical tool.

Close your eyes. Take a deep breath. Imagine you are on a beach, Here(hear) the waves. You are feeling very relaxed, very sleepy…… Hey, wait, not so fast. I mean you don’t wanna follow(fall into)to a hypnotic state just anywhere, right? Well, Interestingly, research published this weekend in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute shows that there may be one place where the magical(magic of) hypnosis pays off: on the operating table. The clinical study showed that women who were(went) under hypnosis just before breast cancer surgery reported less pain, nausea, tick(fatigue) and motional stress. More surprising, they required less anesthetic during surgery. Psychologists hip(hypnotized) patients for 15 minutes. They were asked to close their eyes and imagine each muscle relaxing, has(as) their guided to their special place. The idea that hypnosis redirects the patients’ focus so deeply that they don’t feel the painness(pain as) much. Hypnosis also lead to less time in the O.R., which led to a surprising cost saving about $700 per patient.

Williams Syndrome is a genetic condition as a result of a specific DNA sequence deletion. It’s marked by various health problems and low IQ, but also by an interesting behavior. The child with Williams Syndrome is unusually gregarious. Now researchers at the Laboratory for Cognitive Neuroscience at the Salk Institute have studied how nurture and nature interact in Williams Syndrome. They studied the condition across cultures that have different norms for sociability. The study appears in the journal Developmental Science. The researchers surveyed American and Japanese parents of Williams Syndrome children about the kids’ social habits, such as their tendency to approach other people. In both countries, the Williams kids were rated as much more social than others in their age group. “But culture definitely played a role, because what was considered by Japanese parents to be highly gregarious was behavior that in the US was considered normal in non-Williams kids,” said one of the study’s authors, “We are more than the sum total of our genes. We represent a dynamic interaction between our genes and the environment.”
