Is mold in your house affecting your brain? A study just published in the American Journal of Public Health found that damp moldy houses may contribute to depression. Researchers interviewed nearly 6,000 individuals in 8 European cities, and just 6.5% of people who lived in homes with no apparent mold showed signs of depression, with just a little mold the figure jump to 9.7%, and in the dampest moldiest homes 15.8% of the people reported extensive signs of depression. But wait a minute, mold wasn't the only factor linked to depression. People who lived in the smallest and most crowded homes showed higher rates of depression, as did heavy smokers, the unemployed, and people with the least education. But young people and single men had lower rates, which raises one interesting point: those who said they felt in control of their homes were less likely to be depressed, even if they had mold, which might help explain why college students are so unfazed by the things that grow in old pizza boxes and under piles of clothes. Dude, what mold?

August 30, 2007

this is scientific Americans, sixty seconds science, I am Steve Mirsky, get a minute.

Williams Syndrome is a genetic condition a result of specific DNA sequence deletion it is marked by various health problems and low IQ, but also by an interesting behavior, the child was Williams Syndrome is unusually gregarious. Now researchers of lab for cognitive neuroscience at Salk institute have studied how nature and nurture interact in Williams Syndrome. They studied the condition of cross cultures that have different norms for sociability. The study appears in the journey Developmental science. The researcher surveyed Americans and Japanese of Williams Syndrome children about the kids' social habits such as their tendency to approach other people. In both countries the Williams kids were rated as much more social than others in their age group. But culture definitely play a role. Because what was considered by Japanese parents to be highly gregarious was behaviors that in the U.S .was considered normal in non Williams kids. Said one of the study’s authors we are more than the some total of our gene, we represent a dynamic interaction between our genes and environment.

2007.8.3
Programs that encourage only abstinence from sex do not lower the risk of HIV-infection in the United Staates. That's the conclusion of a review published by University Oxford researchers in ther August forth issue of British Medical Journal. Currently a third of the HIV-prevention founding under ther US emergence p;an for AIDS goes to abstinence only programs, which limits finding available for other safer sex initiatives. The Oxford researchers reviewed thirteen U.S based trails that examined fifteen thousand subjects. The data sugests that abstimence only programes  didn't prevent sex or decrease frequency for those already having sex, nor didi the program lower the incidentce of unprotected sex. Snd accompanying editorial in the British Medical Journal notes that programs that promote kind of ... have been shown to lower the HIV-infection. The US senate already agreed to spend another one hundred and forty one million dollars on abstinence only programs. Prediction the new study will probably change that appriation. Don't expect programs based on ideology to be affected by science buildings.

2007.08.06
On the August 2ed episode, we talked about the amazingly high caloric needs of the cylists competing in the tour de France. Now comes study about group of animal ethli\etes that burning sugar three times faster than even work-class cyclists. They're nector-feeding bats, and they go through their fuel faster than any other mammals on eath. According to researchers reporting in the Journal Functional Ecology. The bats hover, and that kind of flight really burns energy. The scientists fed long toughued bats, they need the long-tongues to get the nector in flowers. They fed the bats suger labaled with radioactive carbon and they measured the carbon that the bats exhaled. They found that bats burn the sugers ingested within minutes, and agter less than half an hour, they were fueling all of their matebolism with new suger. The highest rates in humans-an ethlete who can fuel about a third of their matebolisms from rescently sucked down power drinks. Most mammals store energy and then excise it, but the bat life style require them to develop just in time suger delivery system.

bow!

September 04, 2007: 60-Second Science
Rock Stars Get Early Tombstones

North American and European music stars are twice as likely to die prematurely as are members of the general population. Steve Mirsky reports.

We all know smoking is dangerous, but being a smoking hot rock star or pop star may be even more dangerous, just as Elvis or John Lennon or Janis Joplin or Jimi Hendrix or Buddy Holly or Tupac Shakur. A study in the Journal of Epidemiol Community Health looked at more than a thousand North American and European singers and musicians who became famous between 1956 and 1999. The researchers found that rock and pop stars are more than twice as likely to die in early death as the rest of us nobody’s. First few years after becoming famous are the most dangerous. Drug and alcohol abuse came for about quarter of the early death. In all, 100 of the 1050 music stars included in the study were found to die young. The average age of death for the North Americans was 42. The Europeans  were only made to 35. If they can stay famous for 25 years after they are initial staring?, the European stars death rates become equal to the general population but American idols continue to die sooner than regular folks.
