May 9
Silkworms make silk that much knew. But did you know these industrial little caterpillars can spin silk of different colors? White, yellow, pink, even green. Silkworms get the pigments that used to color the gossamer product from mulberry leaves, the only food they eat. They then use the silk to make themselves some seriously comfy cocoons. Some mutant silkworms can only make white cocoons. This monochromatic characters have mutation in a gene called Y, which stands for yellow blood. They don't absorb the yellow color carotenoid from mulberry leaves, so their blood is colorless and their cocoons are white. This week scientists from Japan announced that the Y gene produces a protein that grabs onto carotenoid. This protein allows cells in the gut to extract the yellow pigment from mulberry leaves, and cells in the silk gland(丝腺) take it up from the blood. By providing mutant silkworms with a good copy of the Y gene, the scientists were able to restore the ability to make yellow cocoons. Such genetic manipulations might someday allow researchers to engineer silkworms that make custom-colored silk. It was a little like (?tweaking), maybe they can get the worms to monogram your silk PJs as well.

听了3遍才写全... 大家只要1遍就能听全吗? 好困难啊... :(
Bold是不确定的.. 求指正 :loveliness:

This is Scientific American 60 second science. I'm Steve Mursky. Got a minute?
Is behaviors influence us by what we see in movies and TV, where the typical free stirgious movie features the trail involved in painful accidents often engaged in homework repairs. And on the April 16th episode of 60 second science we reported on the huge increase in nail gona accidents related to the boom and home handy manny.
Now there's research showing that more of us are falling off ladders. According to a study on the main issue of the American Journal of Preventer of Medicine, more than 2.1 million people were treated in American emergency rooms for ladder accidents from 1990 to 2005. And during the studied period, the number of incidents continued to rise, going up about 50% in 2005 compared with 1990. It's the first study to use national data to analyze ladder-related injuries. The data were collected by the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System run by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission. Surveillance is a useful way to discover accident trends that might otherwise fly below radar. The researchers urged better education to prevent at least some injuries.
Thanks for the minute, for Scientific American, 60 seconds science. I'm Steve Mursky.
