Genetic Finding Could Coax Colored Silks From Silkworms

Some worms make silk, that’s not much new. But did you know these industrious little caterpillars can spin silk of different colors, white, yellow, pink, even green. Silkworms get the pigments to use, t  color some gossamer(蛛丝) product for mulberry leaves(桑叶), they only food they eat. They then use the silk to make themselves a seriously complete cocoon. Some mutton silkworms can make white cocoons. These minor characters have a mutation in a gene called Y which stands for yellow bard. They don’t observe the yellow colors coordinate with the mulberry leaves, so their blood is colorless and their cocoons are white. This week scientists from Japan announced that the Y gene produced protein that grab cotton noise, the proteins allow selves a gut to strengthen pigment for mulberry leaves, so the grind take up the blood. By providing the mulberry silkworms with good copied of the Y gene, the scientists were able to restore their ability to make yellow cocoons. Such genetic relation might some day allow researchers do engineer silkworms mixed with colored silk.
