Wind up
1  something that you say or do in order to make someone angry or worried, as a joke
2         a series of actions that are intended to complete a process, meeting etc:
The President made a s ...

intransitive verb1 a: to come to a conclusion
b: to arrive in a place, situation, or condition at the end or as a result of a course of action
wind up 在这个句子的意思应该是 to arrive in a place, situation, or condition at the end or as a result of a course of action
病人开始在普通病房,然后病情加重后,被转到ICU,也就是重症病房;
所以用wind up in the ICU,表示那些最终来到ICU的病人

中间一句也听了很多遍,不明白;

The following is brought to you by the 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid.
This is Scientific American 60-second psyche, I'm Christine Nicolsin. Got a minute?

Well here's a novel way to weight-off... second help and pumpking pie you're about to woft out in this Thanksgiving. Why don't you watch 3D video of you, or rather a digital clone of you --- jogging? According to researchers at the Stanford University's virtual-human interaction lab, watching a digital you strongly influences the real you. Principle author Justine Forks had 25 subjects watch a digital clone of themselves runing on a tridnal for five minutes, and she found those who watched their digital self-bragsweat spent more time exercising within 24-hour period, and hour more in fact. Then the control subjects who watched another person jogging, that's more than double the surgeon's minimum daily recommendation for exercise. The author suggests that adventually we could have a digital us pop-up ourselves on for reminding us to take that extra lupe around the track. Well persuasion studies have long shown that we are most influenced by those similar twist in looks, values, and education, but here we are being persuaded by  the automan model --- a very self. Hm...Jesus, what happened when Coca Cola finds all about this?

前几句话暂时没听清;带回再听听;

The ability to tell friend from folk could mean difference between life and death. Particularly if you're the hero in the spicerellar.Of course being a good judge of care do also come handy in real life, when you have to say purchase use of a car. Still it may surprise you to learn that even six-month old babies can spot a villain. Researchers at the Yale University found that infances could evaluate individuals on the basis of their actions toward others. The results appeard in the November 22 issue of the Journal Nature. In their setup, six and ten month olds watched as wooden shapes with googly eyes interact on the board in front of them. One shape --- a red circle --- would try to make it up a hill; then a different shape ---- a yellow triangle or a blue square --- would come along to either bump the circle to the top, or shove it back down. After a series of viewings, the babies were asked which shape they like to play with, the triangle or square? In the cases of six-month olds, every baby reach for the shape that were shown helping the circle rather than hindering it; for some reason too, the older babies prefer the jerk. Still that's pretty impressive villain's body, considering that none of the shape was wearing a black hat or had a handable moustache.

The ability to tell friend from foe could mean the difference between life and death—particularly if you’re the hero in a spy thriller. Of course, being a good judge of character also comes in handy in real life, when you have to, say, purchase a used car. Still, it may surprise you to learn that even six-month-old babies can spot a villain. Researchers at Yale University have found that infants can evaluate individuals on the basis of their action toward others. The results appear in the November 22nd issue of Nature. In their setup, six- and ten-month olds watched as wooden shapes with googlie eyes interacted on a board in front of them. One shape, a red circle, would try to make it up a hill. Then a different shape, a yellow triangle or a blue square, would come along and either bump the circle to the top, or shove it back down. After a series of viewings, the babies were asked which shape they’d like to play with, the triangle or the square. In the case of the six-month-olds, every baby reached for the shape that was shown helping the circle rather than hindering it. (For some reason two of the older babies preferred the jerk.) Still, that’s pretty impressive villain-spotting, considering none of the shapes was wearing a black hat or had a handlebar moustache.

handy---- easy to use/reach
googlie
handlebarmoustache 八字胡
villain-spotting

Many people would rather not think about what’s happening to their flesh during laser surgery. And until recently, scientists assumed it wasn’t much different from what happens to water, since living things are mainly water. But a new study of pulsed ultraviolet lasers finds that living tissue actually helps the lasers cut more effectively. These lasers are used in many eye and brain surgeries. they generate plasma with each pulse. When the pulse ends, the plasma collapses and explodes, splitting molecules in the tissue. Using fruitfly embryos, scientists from Vanderbilt University found that this plasma forms more easily in living tissue than in water.  So lasers for some surgeries can be less powerful and less damaging than thought. The researchers also found that living tissue stretches during the plasma explosions. This stretching makes the laser incisions smaller and more precise. These results appear in physical review letters. So while you may be mainly water, it’s the parts of you that aren’t that mean the most under the laser。

it wasn’t much different from what ....
So while you may be mainly water, it's the parts that aren't (water) that means the most under the laser.

It's often joked that pregnant women crave pickles and ice cream; well, it seems that pregnant Ecuadorian bats crave salty mud. The soil in the rainforests where these bats live is notoriously poor in minerals. But muddy spots called “mineral licks” are rare exceptions. A team of scientists from Boston and Berlin trapped bats throughout the Ecuadorian rainforest, including at these mineral licks. They found that bats at the licks were overwhelmingly female, and pregnant or nursing. The bats were probably there to lap up the mud. The researchers think the bats need the minerals to pass on to their young for their growing bones. Fruit-eating bats were more likely to visit the mineral licks than their insect-eating cousins, who get some minerals from their food. Other animals and indigenous people also square their diets with these minerally muds. In fact, they’re sold in Amazonian markets. Writing in the journal “Research Letters in Ecology,” the authors say their muddy discovery could help explain how rainforests can spawn such rich biodiversity with such poor soil.

rare exception (连读发音)
trap some animal
lick  -------- a salt deposit that animals regularly lick; 舔舐;
lap up ---- take up with the tongue

Pharmecutical companies sometimes have to pull new drugs off the market because they harm our livers. The drugs may have been tested on liver cells from rats or on human cells that are nearly dead. But these kinds of tests do a poor job of mimicking real livers. Now researchers at MIT have developed a better method. They've created a colony of human liver cells that act like the  real thing. The research was published in the journal Nature biotechnology. The cell colonies are only five hundred millionth of a meter in diameter. Researchers arranged the cells on a plate in much the same way as copper wires are placed on computer chips. These micro livers mimick the actions of real livers including producing  enzymes necessary to break down drugs and other toxins. The tiny organs last for six weeks, so they can evaluate the effects of drugs over a longer time period than current tests.  The Startup company has licensed the technology and is preparing it for market. The little livers could be cheaper and more accurate than drug tests now used.

这篇比较简单,一遍就懂了;不多说了;

We all know what comes out of cows, and I’m not talking about milk. Well what I am talking is so-called bovine digested salads(solid). That’s the genteel term used by Jerral Warnandy of the US Forests Products Lab in Madison Wisicomsin who has fund in (found a)new use for brown culcreations(cow creations). At the recent World Dairy Expo at Madison, he displayed paper and particle board made from bovine digested salads (solids). Because dairy cows munch on grass, they churn out a lot of salilodes (cellulose) in addition to milk. And Whenandy says there is a big industry of manifold (industrial demand for)woodfiber which is also made in salilodes. It’s used in expensive(inexpensive) furniture like the desk on which your computer may rest. After the so-called bovine digest, the salads (digested solids)get further digested by bacteria to convert some of (it to) the dematheyine (menthane)to rongeneraters,(run generators) the salilodes fiberwood remains. Whenandy and his collegues are looking at how well salilodes could mix with woodfiber. A successful mix would reduce the need for wood and earn dairy farmers much-needed extra bark (buck). Let’s hope the idea doesn’t flop.

munch --- chew noisily
churn --- 搅拌;搅动;
churn out--- produce something at a fast rate
buck --- 钱;雄鹿;反对;

11-29 60-second psyche

Here's a silverstar (sober stat). Smoking is responsible for one in ten deaths worldwide. Well it's dullful of any of us (doubtful any of us need)reminding how dangerous smoking is, but why are you and your loved ones still smoking? And how can we stop? Well a review paper of more than 300 studies published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal found that the best treatment is a long term combo of  medication and psychological therapy. The top meds which can double or triple the chances of  quitting are nicotine replacement therapy which is the patch , gum, wasange (lozenge??), or hiller (inhaler),  bepropiant (bupropion), anepresant (an antidepressant), and a new drug called verellaclin. But the researchers noted that  all the successful attempts to quit the majority were actually done with outmets (without meds; out的音发短太重了;).  Environmental influences like physician advice may be more valuable than we think. Advising  patients to quit, even just once, apparently doubles the quitting rates. The researchers say  that tobacco dependence should be treated not as an acute disease but rather a chronical  disease where should include long term management with the doctor, ultimately enforcing  follow-up for at least one year to bring about that sweets bud (sweet spot; 连读了)of permanent abstinence.

Here's the sober stat ----
meds ---
lozenge
inhaler
bupropion
antidepressant

Toy companies and parents will act (reacted)quickly this year when some toys made in China were found to contain lead. Because lead is known to affect kids' cognant (cognitive)development. In 1991, the centers for disease control set up federal standard of ten micro grams of lead per dassalid (deciliter)of blood. Said (So the) 8 percent of US kids five and younger, well (who havelead levels between five and ten micro grams are considered safe. But recent Kunar University research in the Journal Evironmental Health Perpectives supports a stricter standard. The research team had previously followed kids from birth to age five. The current study looked again at the children at the age six. The kids were divided into two groups, one with blood lead levels between zero and five, and the other with five to ten. Again, currently considered okay. Turn out that those in the five-to-ten group had IQ scores of about five points lower than those with the lower lead levels. Scientists say this curtified (could affect连读的把音都变了)educational performance later their(in) life. They recommend reconsidering federal standards for lead in consumer products and reevaluating the accepatable blood lead level in children.

cognitive
could affect --- could 的读音变了,变成了[kəd],

We all know divorce can be hurt (hard)on kids, but did you ever stop to think about what it’s doing to environment? Well scientists at the Michigan State University have. After quanching (crunching)the numbers, they found when couples split, they use more land, more energy and even more water than before. Here’s why: After a break-up, the astranged (原文好像漏掉了这个词; 不过应该是estranged)parties move into smaller individual house cells (households)which means more land use and more resources consumed per person. In 2005 in the US, divorce aids (divorcees)occupied 38 million extra rooms, and use about 50% more electricity and water per person than they did when they were married. These findings appeared in the online edition of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. So how can we keep doomed relationships from taking the environment down with them? The authors note if all these newly liberated singles remarry, the problem disappears. Or maybe they can just move in with one another. Of course then you have to wonder, “Can two divorced men share an apartment without driving each other crazy?”

crunch --- 嘎扎嘎扎的咬嚼; press or grind with a crunching noise
The whole household was early last Sunday
divorcee ---- a divorced woman or a woman who is separated from her husband
