Don Herbert died this week. For a couple of generations of American(s), he was TV’s Mr. Wizard, doing simple science experiments that kids can understand. Here’s a clip of Herbert and a student. He’s putting a flame to fake money that’s wrapped around a metal bar. But the money won’t burn.
Yeah, but you know why? Cause it has this in it.
What? What is it?
Metal object.
What’s that metal object get to work?
That’s a good conductor and it will take the heat from the flame before the phony money has chance to burn.
What kind of heat, conduction, convection or radiation is this?
It would be conduction.
Conduction! In other words, the heat from the candle goes through the paper and is pulled away so fast by the metal bar that keeps the paper from burning because it cannot get up to the high temperature?
Yeah, I think it’s true.
Ok, then what should happen if you slowly pull that mental bar out from there?
Well, there will be no conductor behind so it’ll burn up.
All right, try on.
There goes. Burning out.
