Caffeine, Exercise May Cut Skin Cancer

July 30, 2007 -- A cup of coffee after your morning jog may help your skin fight the damaging effects of the sun and prevent skin cancer.

A new study with mice shows the combination of caffeine and regular exercise appears to help kill some of the precancerous cells damaged by the sun's ultraviolet-B (UVB) radiation.

The sun-protective effect of this caffeine-exercise combination is still no excuse to skimp on the sunscreen. But researchers say the two may work together to prevent skin cancer better than either element alone.

"We need to dig deeper into how the combination of caffeine and exercise is exerting its influence at the cellular and molecular levels, identifying the underlying mechanisms," says researcher Allan Conney, director of Rutgers University's Cullman Laboratory, in a news release. "With an understanding of these mechanisms we can then take this to the next level, going beyond mice in the lab to human trials.

"With the stronger levels of UVB radiation evident today and an upward trend in the incidence of skin cancer among Americans, there is a premium on finding novel ways to protect our bodies from sun damage."

Caffeine, Exercise, and Skin Cancer
The study compared the effects of caffeine, exercise, and the combination of both in groups of hairless mice whose exposed skin is prone to skin cancer.

One group of mice drank the human equivalent of one or two cups of coffee a day in the form of caffeinated water. Another group voluntarily ran on an exercise wheel, and a third drank and ran.

All of the mice were exposed to UV radiation from lamps that damaged their skin cells.

Some of the damaged (precancerous) skin cells died naturally through apoptosis -- the process that occurs when the body orders damaged cells to die. But the rate of cell death among the precancerous cells was highest in the group that drank caffeine and exercised.

"If apoptosis takes place in a sun-damaged cell, its progress toward cancer will be aborted," says Conney. "The most dramatic and obvious difference between the groups came from the caffeine-drinking runners, a difference that can likely be attributed to some kind of synergy."

Researchers say previous studies have linked increased exercise or caffeine consumption with a lower risk of certain types of cancer, but the mechanisms behind this protective effect of the two working together are still somewhat of a mystery.

The results of the study appear in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

我想第一遍听完大家可能有点差距,但是听了4、5遍应该都达到各自的极限了,然后查了资料就比较接近完美了。

If you plan hitting on the beach any time in the summer, you may want to bring icy coffee and Frisbee. Because scientists at Rutgers University found that coffee(caffein) and exercise may actually protect against the damage raised by (rays of) the sun. Working with the laboratory mice, the researchers discovered that drinking a couple of coffee (caffein) and water and running a couple of miles a day on exercise wheel lower the animals’ risk of skin cancer. It seems that coffee and exercise combine to kill off cells using (……cells whose) DNA (has been) damaged by UV light-- the high energy radiation that is part of sunshine. The UV better(?) itself allow to produce(reproduce) they could go on for(to form) cancers. The results are properly not entirely surprising. Previous study on people showed coffee consumption is linking decrease (decreased risk) of several times (types) of cancer. The same is true for regular work out. But the Rutgers researchers found that two together play a (packed even more) powerful punch on(?) cancer prevention. Now the mice drink a cup of (?)coffee a day, animals consume four times as mount feels as well. So you may take it easy on this bristle(?bresle?). Don’t throw away your sunscreen just yet.

The most important thing is to train yourself to understand as much as you can the first time around. This requires top-down processing (see my other posts—正确听力方法请参见724698635). Listening endless times will not help you become a better listener.

What is also important is you need to acquire the knowledge covered by the recording. You can easily research the topic using Google and get most of the text that way. If you do this properly, next time you hear someone talk about the same topic, you will find it very easy to understand. In other words, reading will help you become a better listener.

The first sentence means animals shall not take in too much caffeine, otherwise their health may be impaired. And since espresso is a kind of strong coffee, you'd better not try it too hard.  ...

The research showed animals who consumed too much caffeine did not do as well. Apparently it only works if you take in the right amount of caffeine. So Karen advises us not to drink too much espresso (strong coffee with lots of caffeine).

Could reading be good for your health? And more ways than one? Last week, we talked about researches that show far higher mortality rates and people with low literacy skills, They just don't know how to fallow health care advice. This week, a study published by the American Academy of Neurology found that stronger reading skills seem to help sheer lead smelter workers from toxic damage. The new study divided smelter workers in Canada into 2 groups: those with high and low cognitive reserve. That's the brain's ability to function in spite of damage. The workers were tested for cognitive skills--how fast they think, motor speed skills-- how fast they react and reading ability. Despite similar levels of exposure to lead, the groups show very different results. The cognitive effects of lead were 2.5 times greater in workers with poor reading ability. Scientists think that heavy thinking could contribute to more brain capacity and the ease of using alternative circuits--a kind of brain backup system. Still, the fancy book learning wasn't to a zero. Exposure to lead impact to the motor speed of both groups is about the same way.
