Making Ants Say Uncle

Brazil might be where's ants come from, but ants from Argentina have invaded California and some other states, leaving destructions in their wake. Pesticides and traps haven't worked. One colony goes from San Diego to north of San Francisco. The Argentine ants displace native one species, and that has ripple effects. Creatures that feed on native ones go hungery, and incects do agricultural damage unless kept in checked by native ones and now are afraid to destroy crops. But scientists, the University of California, Irvine, think they've come up with ways to defeat the ants by turning against each other. They reported their technic last week at the meeting of the American Chemical Society. The answer recognize each other through specific chemicals on their bodies. The researchers coated them with chemicals just slightly different from the natural compounds. That's like putting a confederal uniform on a union soldier. When other ants got a whiff of their old pal, they attaked. the hope is that the technic could cause descent with the entire colony, because even a house of ants divided against itself can understand.

August 06

On the August second episode, wetalked about the amazingly high caloric needs of the cyclists competingin the Tour de France. Now comes a study about a group of animalathletes that burns sugar three times faster than even world-classcyclists. They are nectar-feeding bats and they go though their fuelfaster than any other mammal on earth. According to researchersreported in the Journal Functional Ecology. The bats' hover and thatkind  fly really burns energy. The scientists fed long-tongued bats. They need those long-tongue to get the nectar in flowers. They fed thebats sugar, labelled with radioactive carbon and then measured thecarbon at the bats' exhale. They found that bats burned the sugars andingested within minutes and after less than half  an hour, they werefueling all of their metabolism with the new sugar. The highest ratesin humans are athletes who can fuel about a third of their metabolismsfrom recently suck-down power drinks. Most mammals store energy andexcess it, but the bat lifestyle require them to develop a just-in-timesugar delivery system.

August 6

On the August second episode, we talked about the amazing high caloric needs of cyclists competing in the Tour de France. Now comes a study about a group of animal life list that burn sugar three times faster, than even world class cyclists. They are nectar-feeding bats, and they go through their fuel than any other mammal on earth, according to a research reported on Journal of Functional Ecology. The bats hover, and that kind of fly really burn energy. The scientists fed long tongue bats-- they need long tongue to get the nectar in flowers. They fed the bats sugar, labeled with radioactive carbon and then measured the carbon at the bats’ exhale. They found that bats burn the sugar and ingest within minutes. And after less than half hour, they were fueling all of their metabolisms with new sugar. The highest rates in humans are athletes who can fuel about 1/3 of metabolisms from recent suck down power drinks. Most mammals storage energy and exercise it. But the bats’ life style require them to develop a just in time sugar deliver system.

August 07

The food and beverage industries spent more than 10 billion dollars a year in the US to market their products to children. And its money well spent for them by age, too. Children may already harbor preferences for certain brands. And kids under six can often associate brands with specific products, such as McDonald's. Here's how powerful the McDonald's brand is, according to a study just published in the August's issue of the journal Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine. Preschool kids all were given the exact same food in other unmarked packages or in McDonald's packaging. But the kids all between 3 and 5 years old said they liked the taste better when the food looked like it was from McDonald's. All of the foods tested was carrots! "What's up, duckWhat's up is that the kids said they liked "McDonald's carrots" better than just playing carrots by more than two to one. And the more TV sets in a kid's home, the more likely he or she was to prefer the food in McDonald's bags. "Goodbye!"
