Government spend money on improving roads or highways or public transportation(trains, buses,

subways)


As more and more people and cars rushed into cities, no one can doubt the essential fact that

the traffic problem over the last years have caused public concern all over the world. There

are several reasons for this problme, one of the main reasons is that the number of vehicles

is increasing much more rapidly than the building of roads. Another primary reason is that

there seem to be too many private cars and not enough public buses.

Someone argues that the government should spend more money on improving roads and highways,

just for the reasons that if there is more road, less jam will result. I agree that

government investment on basic such as roads or highways can be benificial for the economy,

however, if the resource is limited, I think the money spent on public trasportation can be

more efficient to solve the city problem.

Compared to buiding roads, investing on the public trasportation can be more quickly. There

are two ways of investing on transportation: the first is add the quantity of public buses,

trains or subways. That means people taking the public transportation will be more

convinient, thus convinient public transportation can cause less pollution and traffic jam.

It is known that building a 10-kilometer long road may take one or two year long, while

investing on the public transportation will take shorter time.

Another way of investing on the public transportation is to lower the price aiming to attract

more people to take. Take Beijing for example, when the olympic comes, the government lower

the bus price from 2yuan to 0.4yuan and the subway from 3yuan to 2yuan, while the taxi cost

10yuan at least and the oil price goes uper and uper. The result is that more people choose

to take public transportation and the air condition has improved a lot these years.
