The dialectic relation between artiest and critic is a lasting topic in human society just like the lasting value they bring to us(我觉得两个比较不同位). In my opinion, artist and critic are bonded together closely as an integral to play the irreplaceable role in history as well as modern times and to achieve the level that neither of them separately could fulfill.
Critics furnish the gangway ladder for the society to access the ship of art and appreciate its peerless value. Artists express their emotions, thoughts and skills in their artwork subjectively, which most of the time we do not share a common ground with. To enter the art sanctuary, critics are needed to build up this common ground based on individual perspectives but with further insights. Take Marquis de Sade for example, being a vanguard and precursor of many realms whose works were for a long time obscure, he receives criticisms from numerous writers and artistes, especially those concerned with sexuality. No matter whether they are praise or disparagement, without the criticisms the masses could hardly get to know Sade and his works by no means. They are like the media collecting society with artists.
Critics facilitate the society’s interpretation on the miscellaneous value of art. Art is that which is made with intention of stimulating the human senses as well as mind. Pay tribute to Mona Lisa, which is one of the most famous paintings in the world, how many of us are able to experience the exquisite wonder without the scrutiny, study, mythologizing or parody subject to this masterpiece? Individual can only indicate one bearing of it. Yet the various criticisms have revealed and explained the Mona Lisa to us in discrepant aspects. In other word, critics provide us a perspective that transcends individual's comprehension and cultural barriers. This common ground, to some extent, shortens the distance from us to the art.
We may even say, critics are recreating the artwork from the stimulation of art, the criticism then serves as an artwork itself and inspires the society equivalently. For instance, Redology(什么东西?)as the field of research that specialises in the study of the classical Chinese literary masterpiece “Dream of the Red Chamber” which due to its vast scholarship can generally be divided into four schools of thoughts. With further evaluation and investigation on this novel, Redology now itself contribute value to the society competently and gloriously. Its elaborate research on “Dream of the Red Chamber” disclose the society structure, language usage or even clothes custom in 18th century, China. The critics, using their intellect on evaluate the artwork, are rendering to the society their enthusiasm and brilliance which goes a long way.
From a more anthropological perspective, art is often a way of passing ideas and concepts on to later generations in a universal language. The interpretation of this language is very dependent upon the observer’s perspective and context, and it might be argued that the very subjectivity of art demonstrates its importance in providing an arena in which rival ideas might be exchanged and discussed, or to provide a social context in which disparate groups of people might congregate and mingle. Just like a mansion cannot be built without bricks and concrete, the mansion of lasting value cannot exist without artist and critic. Nevertheless, inappropriate or even misguided criticisms are always standing in the way and distract the society from the preservation of energetic and effective value. Yet we are not supposed to negate the positive meanings critic has brought to us, like we never disregard the blaze of artist because of the existing of some bad art.
In sum, artist and critic both give the society something of lasting value. With the assistance of critic, we can find the way to know and appreciate art. In fact, criticism is not supposed to have a clear boundary with art. With the social context provided by critics based on which art is interpreted, society is destined to maintain the value generally. |
