Is it the artist or the critic who gives society something of lasting value? In this statement, the author claims that it is artist rather than critic that gives society something of lasting value. In my view, they both contribute to society.

Indubitably, artists compose masterpieces which have indelible value. For example, Michelangelo composed the splendid sculpture David, which makes us can not help exalting. Not only contemporary people but our descendants must draw inspiration from David. Similarly, Beethoven, a genius musician, composed a series of great music, such as the ninth symphony, which elevates our mind. When it comes to literature, we can never forget great poet Dante, who composed Divine comedy, which shows heaven and hell to us. Those artists and their masterpiece are just like pearls which consist a glorious necklace. Supposing without them, we would return savage times. Unquestionably, these great people, gives the society the treasure of permanently valuable  

However, we cannot forget the contribution of critics who are not so famous as artists. When we enjoy pearls or diamonds, we should thank to the labor of the works who select them from stones and sand. Critics are just like those workers, who tell us which works is diamond and which is sand. Oscar catapults a lot of film to prominence, such as Titanic, brokeback mountain etc. When we suffers from shock brought by these films, we can not forgot the hard work, superior appreciation and impartiality of the judge of Oscar. Similarly, without the judge of Nobel Price we can never enjoy the masterpieces composed by owners of Nobel Price for literature.  It is so ridiculous to enjoy Titanic while claim that only artist create something of lasting value.

Besides, critics can mirror the flaws of works, which can often turn the tide of art. Empirical evidence proves that progress of art and culture often originates from beneficial critic. It is just the brave critic deny the art of religion which restrict humanity, that promote the development of humanism. Without them we do not know whether the art of ancient Greece and ancient Rome is better or the medieval art. For that matter artist will lost the direction to advance.

To sum up, the artist do give society  something of lasting value, but we should not ignore the contribution of critics who introduce the masterpiece to us , moreover, give the true direction to artists.
