Argument47
Scientists studying historical weather patterns have discovered that in the mid-sixth century, Earth suddenly became significantly cooler. Although few historical records survive from that time, some accounts found both in Asia and Europe mention a dimming of the sun and extremely cold temperatures. Either a huge volcanic eruption or a large meteorite colliding with Earth could have created a large dust cloud throughout Earth's atmosphere that would have been capable of blocking enough sunlight to lower global temperatures significantly. A large meteorite collision, however, would probably create a sudden bright flash of light, and no extant historical records of the time mention such a flash. Some surviving Asian historical records of the time, however, mention a loud boom that would be consistent with a volcanic eruption. Therefore, the cooling was probably caused by a volcanic eruption.
In this argument the author represents a seeming possible reason that the earth surface was covered by a huge dust cloud which could have been created by an enormous volcanic eruption or a large meteorite colliding with Earth, leads to the abnormal cold, since the meteorite collision has been abnegated for a lack of suspicious evidence, the author is more appreciative with the former. However, this is an adventurous hypothesis, which has not so sufficient supports and analyses.
In the passage, only two possible causes are enumerated, so the author focuses on one of them, but we should not neglect other situations which may also bring the cold climate, the probabilities of these situations may be small but that doesn’t indicate we can deny them. As we all know, the change of temperature is not only related with the earth itself but also with the circumstance surrounded it, for instance, the abnormal solar effect influence the absorbance of light which reaches globosity, can also lead to a climate transformation. There is another case that a planet happened to be an obstacle between the sun and the earth, which weakens the heat from the sun.
If neglect the accounts found in Asia and Europe which mention a dimming of the sun, and only to the earth itself, some reasons of this change can also be proposed. A dareful fancy is that a comet consisted of cold substance such as lox or liquid air accidentally crashes at the earth surface, which do not bring a huge dust cloud but can decrease the temperature directly. At the same time we should consider the movement of lithosphere, if both the arctic and antarctic areas displace with other places of the earth, under the effect of sunlight the snow and ice may melt gradually, with the process of the transform, many heats have been used and leave a cold atmosphere.
However, granted that these two suggestions are tested to be the most probable, the lack of extant historical records of a large meteorite collision doesn’t indicate we could allege its inexistence. Here needs more material evidences to abnegate one of them, that is, before new founds come out, determine each one of them is unfair to the other, there may be a compositive reason that is more complicated than we consider. We must discover new breakthroughs in this topic.
In sum, make a decision with the article the author presents is too thoughtless. First, other possibilities should be taken into account can we get a more objective conclusion. Second, it can’t persuade others to believe in the author only with the causes represented, we need more evidences. Whether the reason is simple or intricate, the in-depth analysis is the most important. |
