Issue 41
Such nonmainstream areas of inquiry as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits play a vital role in society by satisfying human needs that are not addressed by mainstream science.
I partly agree with the point the statement supports above that the nonmainstream areas of inquiry really meet some people’s particular needs could not be reached by our orthodox science, such as physics, chemistry or mathematics. However on my observance, it is too hasty to judge that these nonmainstream disciplines play a critical role in the entire society because the harms they bring far surpass the advantages go with them.
In the first place, admittedly, in some special aspects, especially in spirit and mentality state, orthodox subjects dominate our academic study and research fail to answer a lot of questions people render because of the boundary which they lack the ability to exceed. When it comes to this, turning to astrology, fortune-telling, or other heterodoxy is always a way to find a seeming reasonable explanation for your problem or even tackle, at least as they claim, them. Lacking this sometimes the accumulated pressure or distraught on your mind without a vent to release it might cause some serious problem. In this aspect, the nonmainstream could really make a significant difference.
Nevertheless, basing on nonscientific fundament, the harms it brings could render the benefits minimal things. You need not look further than the fact the function it makes is just circumscribed on spirit level. If we rely entirely on them you would inevitably not only the right direction in life but also damage your health or interests. For example, every year there are innumerous people indulge in the heresy because too much depending on non-sciences, furthermore the abandoning would cause a series of result as squandering money to donate, losing normal mind and even ultimately suicide, maybe. In this aspect, the nonmainstream inquiry can serious destroyed the human beings as a whole sometimes.
In the other important issue that concerns with science development, it is also better to rely less on nonscientific base but more on its own theory system. If too many people depend too much on nonmainstream inquiry will distract attention from our science which further our society progress not only on economy but also on culture. Take Isaac Newton, a great English mathematician and scientist in 16 century. In his early year, inventing of differential calculus and formulating of the theories of universal gravitation, terrestrial mechanics, and color no doubt let him the most significant science harbinger on classic physics. However, his later time contribute only to some religion study from which he want to find explanation to the unsolved dilemmas in his physics research. No matter his own opinion on his later year study, the scientific historians almost criticize the religion fruits are nothing valuable aide from pure religion facet. As the same, there are a lot of people denoting a lot of money every year for religion or superstition reason instead of educational reason.
In sum, although the nonmainstream inquiry mentions in the topic really meet some need people required, but consider the human beings as a whole and the scientific progress nonscience damage us largely. So, on my own judge, it would never disappear or take more responsibility in our current age. |
