"Competition is ultimately more beneficial than detrimental to society."

Whether is competition  more beneficial or detrimental to our society? In my view, competition is something like a coin that has two sides--it is fundamentally  beneficial to society, however,if it comes to evil level, it will be detrimental. Thus, we should consider the issue in two respects.
First ,in research field ,competition prods researchers to make innovations and discoveries. If someone is satisfied with what he has achieved and makes no progress any more, he will drop behind. When the technology can be realized in production, he may even  be defeated by his competitors. Intel and AMD are both producers of CPU. Competition between them makes researchers of each company know that if they don't add new technology into their products costantly, they will be kicked out of  the market. From Pentium to Core, Intel is always innovating. AMD also provides a series of high quality productions.
What is more, consumers gain lots of benefits from the competition between the producers. To attract consumers,producers try their best to improve the quality at the same time reduce the cost of their products. Higher  technology and cheaper but  with high performance  materials are  found and added to the productions in  shorter and shorter cycle. Thus, consumers are often offered the newest productions at a low price.
Finally, competition gives us the energy to go foward.For example, when we don't have the spiritual energy to progress ,if we think of our competitors who are working very hard at the same time and we will fall behind if we take a break we may feel full of energy and come back to work. After all no one want to follow his competitors’' step due to a certain human nature.
Admittedly, competition will also be detrimental to society if it goes to evil level.First,it may lead to animosity.We often see on TV that fight happens in  football or basketball  competition,or two scientists demean each other .As I see it ,the competitors above cares too much about the result of the competition or fame and contribution.After all ,The main goal of sport is to incite a person to compete with himself ,thus to improve himself both  physically and psychologically not just to win the game. The main goal   of science is to make mankind live a better life not to make the scientists distinguished and remembered .Misunderstanding of the goal of the competition should be avoided by competitors.
Further, it  wastes the wealth,energy,intelligence of our society.Wars for instance,are competitions for territory and energy.A lot of money that can be used to enlighten people are spent to murder innocent people.The resources:oil ,metal which is limited are lavished just in order to "get more of them". Scientists who should work to improve the life of human turn to be killers,and technology they use makes them the most efficient killers.If the money,energy,intelligence can be used in a proper way not in the competition of wars ,they will benefit our society more.
In final analysis, the function of competition is due  to different situations and the competitors' attitudes towards it.We cannot determine whether it's more beneficial or detrimental to our society  just looking at one respect.

What is more, how about add "in the realm of business" becaue previously you are talking about research consumers gain lots of benefits from the competition between the producers.
