*a person who evaluates works of art, such as novels, films, music, paintings, etc.

1.无可否认，作为艺术品的创造这来说，艺术家的作用是要放在首位的，而评论家有的时候不能理解作者的意图，可能会觉得艺术品一文不值，这是时代所限制的，此时评论家起的作用与其说是推动，倒不如说是阻碍。
2.到头来说,一些晦涩的艺术作品到底还是被人们所接受,这也是评论家们的努力,或许在当时被世俗的观点所限制,但在以后的鉴赏中,他们逐渐发现那些伟大作品的价值,并用一种更容易接受的方式让群众理解.
3.从某种意义上来说,评论家的存在也使得艺术能够更加完善的发展,正是评论家们苛刻的眼光,使得艺术家们要不断完善自己的作品,在这一过程中,艺术得到了提高,其中有艺术家的努力,同样也有评论家的参与

The speaker of this topic makes an assertion that the one who gives society something of lasting value is artist, not the critic. It is tempting when considering that artist is the main participation in the produce of arts. While the claim seems undoubted in abstract, it still overlooks some practical problems.

Admittedly, as the creator of arts, artist should be put at the first place. Greatest artists are sometimes out of step of contemporary society since their imagination and insights, due to his extreme intelligence, are far beyond the understanding of populace. Since the notions of critics are, to some degree, subjective, they may mislead others to their tastes. If the critic can not understand the intention of the artist, he may lead others to a mistake that these great works is meaningless and worthless. That's why many great artists could not accepted by coeval. If it is the case, the effect of critic is baffle rather than impetus. After all, the lasting value of great arts is decided by the history, not the critics. Those which are just engaged in pleasing the gout of critics are not the real arts, because they are not the actual reflection they should focus on.

However, since the one that is recognized by others can be called as great arts, some arts are too obscure to be understood for common people and , because of some unexpected reasons, the artist himself fails to explain the inner meanings. Sometimes it's the efforts of critics that discover the idea of those artists. Although they may be limited by the  aesthetics of their age, the critics that live after them may gradually dig out the value of the great value that have already been forgotten for years because the critics are more sensible to the beauty. They are the connection between artists and audience. Some criticism can be accepted as an elicitation for us to reach the essence of the arts. For example, many great works of the ancients in China are too abstract and inscrutable for us and some critics and expects interpret the ancient prose into a much easy way, which is based on large amount of studies.

Moreover, existences of critics can impulse the process that the arts can be perfectly developed. It's the strict vision that enforces the artists to consummate their works. During this process, the value of a art can be promoted. We can not deny that artist is the creator while critic plays a role of catalyze. Because of their intendance, artist can not make short shrift. The critics are the filtration that distinguishes the great from the common.

Taking into account all these factors, we may safely arrive at the conclusion that, obviously, the artist is the most essential part of the birth of something of great value. At the same time, we can not ignore some active effect of critics. Otherwise, we may probably lose a much easy access to the greatness.
