"A nation should require all its students to study the same national curriculum until they enter college rather than allow schools in different parts of the nation to determine which academic courses to offer"
Should national curriculum be given to students until they enter colleges instead of allowing schools in different parts of the nation determining which academic courses to offer? In general, I agree that the same national curriculum can avoid lots of inconvenience, however, we should not overlook the disadvantage of this activity at the same time.
First of all, national curriculum save lots of property, materials for our society. There will be no need for headmasters, teachers to determine which course should be included in the curriculum and which part should be taught. They can devote more time to administrating and teaching. At the same time, money will saved, for textbooks and assignment will be unified rather than being written by different parts of the nation respectively. The money can contribute to improve equipments and support poor students. It will also be convenient to hold national wide examinations, for the time , papers and the standards by which to evaluate papers will be unified instead of being determined in differnet regions respectively.
Secondly, this activity will facilitate colleges. If the curriculum in different regions are different, the exams to select students must be different. To ensure equality, colleges need to set up different standards for applicants from different regions specially. The standards should include the situation of that region and the overall situation of the nation which render it a very big job for the administrators of the college .After enrollment teachers have to make sure whether his or her classes can be understood by freshmen with different backgrounds. If freshmen from a certain place cannot keep pace with others, the teacher has to give lessons additionally. Thus a unified curriculum make convenience to colleges.
Additmetedly,we should not neglect the fact that different regions have different situations especially in the fields of ideology and culture system And a national curriculum may be not an advisable choice. For example a self-governing region may warship only its own language, thus it's not wise to open another language course by government which may lead to a conflict. It's also not wise to try to introduce another ideology to a religious region which may bring about unnecessary trouble .Similar courses should also include history, politics, etc.
Further ,national curriculum may neglect the courses that typify the characteristics of a certain region .For example, the languages, festivals, gestures, etc. They may be handed down by forerunners dating backing to hundreds of years and are fortune for people not only in that region but also all around the world. If no one is cultured to take and spread the characteristics ,they will be lost gradually making a loss to our human race.
In final analysis ,as a coin has two sides, the same national curriculum bring about both convenience and potential trouble to our society. The best way to solve the problem,as I see it,is to require basic courses to students national wide, meanwhile, give right to different regions to decide whether certain courses should be included in its own curriculum.
