Issue 70 “in any profession-business, politics, education, government-those in power should step down after five years. The surest path to success for any enterprise is revitalization through new leadership.”

I partly concede with the author’s point that leaders no matter in what area should abdicate after a proper period and let their successors take charge with a fresh activity and innovative idea. With full of eager and motive a new leadership could always bring some breakthroughs and surprises in many complicate problems for their different perspective and consideration. However, the transition of an authority is an intricate issue must be dealt with properly. An exact period of a leadership and the effect taken by former leaders also needs a further discussion.

After some years’ domination and contribution a leader group is inclined to be exhausted in inspirations and energy, and in some complex problems they may be not able to display a useful solution from their conventional view and behavior. Thus a change of administrators is a necessary and wise choice, especially one happens with an election. In the election process a presentation and demonstration of the candidates’ ability in supervise and new ideas of some existing issues must be manifested to the public, people can take their commentaries and perspectives into consider and vote for the most effective and efficient one, the result is the formation of a new powerful leadership, and a path to success in the future. What’s more, the pressure from reorganization would also conduct the current leaders to present their behaviors deliberatively and accurately, for a fear of be replaced quickly. So a change in the leadership is an effective way to make the organization full of activities and progress all the time.

However, the period of this transition should be discussed in different situations, indeed five years seems a proper time yet sometimes may be long or short. In politics and government, that’s enough for our leaders to comply with their five-year appearance. In contrast, educate dominators and business directors should deserve a longer career, as we all know, merchandise or services in business market always respond in a chronic period, or even an unpredictable dramatic alteration some years later, so an observation to an administrator should be more than five years and leaving enough spaces and time to his ability and ambition. Education is a special vocation which needs an accumulative experience and knowledge, these already superior guiders should emanate more lights in the marching procession of education. And to other kind of work there would be different study. Over all the interval of a leadership needs to adapt to the demand of its organization.

It must be remembered that abdication doesn’t mean disappearance from the public; after all with several years’ supervision the predecessors are more familiar and clear with many crucial issues than their successors, and their abundant experience is also a treasure to the after. Without the former leaders’ help the new ones may confront with many troubles and unfavorable obstacles at first in their new position. So the success in any enterprise is not only with a new leadership’s innovation but the olds’ practical directions, too thorough and drastic transformation also leads to an unstable situation which may bog down the progress of an organization.

Consequently, revitalization in the leader group can be regarded as an effective way to impulse the progress of an organization, yet it must be taken with a fully and thoroughly deliberation and discussion, especially around the topics of proper leadership interval, and predecessors’ possible contribution when they abdicate. Only after a stable and successful transition, the new leaders could present their aspiration and release their energy in the new enterprise totally.
