TOPIC: ISSUE150 - "Because of television and worldwide computer connections, people can now become familiar with a great many places that they have never visited. As a result, tourism will soon become obsolete."
WORDS: 730         半夜写的,很废的一篇,iq28版主这样说我,偶以后都不敢发了。。。:L

Would the television or internet nowadays render us a medium to know places that we never visited and hence tourism is losing its charm? In my opinion, I totally agree with the speaker that television and worldwide computer connection are facilitating our perception on the world around. Yet those media cannot substitute the traditional tourism. In the contrary, it would stimulate tourism's prosperity.

First of all, television and internet provide people a platform to see the world around. Sitting in couch, we could easily get to know the greatness of The Eiffel Tower; we could conveniently experience the magnanimity of the Terracotta Army in Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor; or we could effortlessly explore the primitive life in one of the tribe of Africa. We may become an "expert" about those places by just changing the channels on TV, Let alone the prodigious talent---internet. Worldwide computer connections shorten our distance to the world. We can search the information about whatever place we are interested; we can talk to people from anywhere and experience their local culture; we also can introduce our hometown in myspace, for instance, to friends around the world. We have to admit that the advanced technology brings us powerful media that can help us become familiar with a great many places that we have never been to.

However, the conclusion that tourism will soon become obsolete is lacking of consideration and naive. The speaker certainly makes the mistake of equaling tourism with familiar to a place. The reason people like to take a travel is not only because they are fascinated about knowing other places. Sometimes people just feel being trapped in everyday life and would like to change the environment for a couple of days; sometimes people want to enjoy their time with friends by taking a tour together; sometimes people like to experience the unknown and that's why they're backpacking in remote areas; sometimes people like to travel because they are craving to record and recreate the beauty, hence they are shooting along the trip.

Media cannot substitute personal experience by all means. Watching the introduction material about Niagara Falls is totally differentwith feeling the mist flying towards face. Knowing all the places of interest in a city from internet probably cannot compare with the joy of reminiscence caused by a souvenir in the corner of the living room. Looking the mighty wilderness areas in TV surely cannot furnish the fresh smell of soil and trees. Or talking about future, the European aerospace giant EADs says it will build a space plane for space tourism. The vehicle is expected to give the tourist a experience of weightlessness at the top of its climb. How can we feel it truly if we only put our hope on getting to know it through television or internet? Watching TV at home or getting information on net are not a counterpart or substitution of tourism. I guess that's why people are still keeping the tradition of honeymoon traveling, but not celebrate it by watching TV or surfing net at home.

Lastly, in the contrary of the speaker's statement, the growing use of television and internet are motivating people to go out and travel. Having recognized the distinction between getting to know a place from media and experience the true environment by tourism, TV programs or internet are more or less like the advertisements pulling us out of our everyday life and go traveling. Through TV, we are able to know various places that we only heard before. From the elaborate introduction and showy images, we may be stimulated to experience it by self. Also, internet provides the platform that facilitates tourism. For example, we can now book the hotel or check the map on line. Internet can also get together friends with the same interest on tourism. People can share information or make a trip altogether. In fact many forums about tourism are growing and become very popular and success. It is the modern technology---media---that brings tourism to a new booming time.

In sum, television and worldwide computer connections do furnish people with information about other places. Nevertheless, it cannot serve to infer that tourism will soon become obsolete. People like to travel not only because they want to become familiar about a place. Media cannot substitute personal experience in tourism. In fact, television and internet are facilitating tourism to some extent.
