I226:"People are mistaken when they assume that the problems they confront are more complex and challenging than the problems faced by their predecessors. This illusion is eventually dispelled with increased knowledge and experience." 2007-06-28
Is it actually a gloss that the problems we confront are more complex and challenging than that faced by our predecessors, as the author asserts? Certain not. In may opinion, whether you concede or not, in this era of development of science and technology leading to society advanced, more and more problems challenge our intelligence due to their complexity and intractability, and the increase knowledge and experience contribute to make the settlement more accessible and in our element, rather than dispel the illusion. To begin with, it is not a gloss that we confront more complex and challenging problems than our predecessors did. Owing to faster and faster globalization and modernization, people have to face some problems that involve in a lot of country’s interest, concern and even solve these problems in a peaceful way that could balance these interests. Consider, the war between America and Iraq, which if happened in the past, it is a war that America could declare a war on Iraq directly, rather than to vote and even have to strike a move bypassing the United Nations Security Council for it did not agree with other four permanent member of the Security Council in the vote. Another example on science maybe have more persuasion, that is, the problem caused by the technology of clone, whether we could clone human beings or not, resulting in a moral issue that human have never confronted. Admittedly, the development of science and technology do bring us many a thoughts and problems in every aspects of our culture, such as the genetic engineering, nukes, and so on, other than the clone of human beings. It is an unheard-of era that science and technology bring complexity of our moral and ethic and challenge our intellect as well as the issue about society. It is indispensable that we solve or endeavor to solve these complex problems, as they are our duty, because it is we the humans who create these problems and add complexity to them to challenge our abilities, with the help of increased knowledge and experience. We endeavor to conquer cancer like we endeavored to protect ourselves from the devastating infections in the past, depending on our knowledge, which we increase it as the development of science and technology. Also we try our best to settle the international issue with the increased experience from conflicts and controversy. All these broaden our views and deepen our thought ways, which equip us with deep thoughts and delicacy when we confront the more complex problems than our predecessors. So, as a conclusion, that we might confront more complicate problems than our predecessors did, but with our increased knowledge and experience we may solve them, if not more properly, as our predecessors did before. |
