Issue186 “practicality is now our great idol, which all powers and talents must serve. Anything that is not obviously practical has little value in today’s world.”

In this issue the speaker presents his point that the pursuing of practicality which can be regarded as the utmost object should involves all powers and talents, and more practical means more value. Yet practicality indeed brings us many conveniences, its negative effect should not be overlooked, either, and only the practicality which meets the human’s behalf in long term deserves our pursuit.

Admittedly, in many aspects especially in modern development of technology and daily life, practicality is a welcome matter for its economy in time and energy which are more and more important in human life. Practicality means more effective, more useful and convenient, it helps us to manufacture more products in a short process; the result is an increase in productivity and an enhancement in competition when we confront with the external challenges. This is the reason why all nations no matter wealthy or under-develop are doing their endeavor to develop the top technology and science research for more practicality in case of dropping behind.

However, severing in the practicality blindly is harmful for human being, because things that are practical don’t mean they are also benefit to our society and nature. There are some kind of practicality which is based on more injury and destruction. For instance, the power house based on coal burning, whose safety and usefulness would not be abnegated by anyone, but governments do not want to advocate it for its severe pollution in air and waste in resource utilization, they are looking for a more effective method as nuclear power even if it seems more dangerous. Another example concerns the vogue issue of clone, a breakthrough in biotechnology with a potential value in application, but is harshly forbidden for the diversion of moral and ethnic standards. The true practicality we pursue must be considered in relation to many aspects and should not be judged thoughtlessly.

What’s more, in the long term what would the whole things of practicality bring to us may not be manifested as positive as we think. When we are delighted with the convenience and economy in time, simultaneously our life tempo is expedited, less imaginative space would be left when we are exhausted in tackling with everything practical. Overflow in material practicality leads to a neglect of spiritual enjoyment such as arts, which are most abstract and need time or energy to digest. In fact arts are not practical in daily life, if complying with the speaker’s point, dropping them and something useless like them, a terrible scene is the destruction of human culture and civilization, without spirits we equal machines, no sensation, and no affection.

In sum, when we are concerning about the practicality which is brought to us by modern technology, for the sake of behalf, an intensive consideration of their negative effects is also important, and usually all practicality would not meet our need. In my opinion, practicality is only an implement when we can improve our life quality better; it should not dominate our mind and action, just like money in common life, we need to take charge of it instead of going after it.
