ARGUMENT148
The following appeared in the editorial section of Monroetown's local newspaper.
"Mayor Brown was recently re-elected by a clear majority of 52 percent of Monroetown's voters. Her re-election, however, does not show that most people in our town favored Mayor Brown's proposal for tax reduction over that of her opponent, Mr. Greene, who proposed raising taxes to improve education. It has been shown that voters nationwide tend to re-elect people already in office, regardless of candidates' proposals. In fact, a local survey after the election showed most people in Monroetown disagreed with Mayor Brown's proposal. Clearly most people in Monroetown favor improving education and therefore approve of Mr. Greene's proposal despite the fact that they did not vote for him."
提纲:
In this argument, the arguer reaches the conclusion that most of voters agree with Mr. Greene's (Mr. G) political view although they vote for Ms Brown (Ms B). To enhance the conclusion, the arguer compares two people's political views. Besides this, the arguer also cites the result of a survey as an example in support of the argument. At the first glance, the argument appears to be somehow plausible, while a close examination will reveal how groundless it is.
First, the arguer points out that Mr. G hopes to raise taxes to improve education, it is really not so. Raising taxes will add people's loading of the Monroetown; so it is not the best way to gather money. There are many ways to collect money for education except raising taxes. For example, it can get money through rich man's endowing, or by the loan. Even if raising taxes is the best way for money collection, and it will add revenue of the town, there is not any evidence to make sure that the added parts will be used for education. It may be used for medical treatment, maintenances of the old, road construction, or for the development of the economic. Thus, it can not be thought Mr. G's proposal is the best one and will help the education’s development actually.
Second, the arguer cites the nationwide trend to instead of the town's dislike and like. Even though the nationwide trend is really, nationwide statues can not stand for local detail situation. Granted that voters will re-elect people who are already in the position in nationwide, the town can still be a exception. It maybe in the town, voters are more likely to vote for the people whose proposal is the best one for the town. It can not judge Monroetown's situation according to the nationwide trend.
Third, the arguer reaches the result that the local people don not agree with Ms B's proposal through the result of a survey lack the detail information of the survey. The arguer doesn't point out who did the survey, how many people were involved and how the survey was conducted. It is possible that Mr. G's supporters did the survey. Because they like Mr. G, they maybe choose the same style people for the survey. And, it is also probably there are only 10 people were involved in the survey; the 6 people are disagreed with Ms B's proposal. The result that they disagreed with Ms B doesn’t mean the guess that they like Mr. G’s proposal. Lacking so much information, the result of the survey can not be set as evidence.
Forth, the arguer thinks many people in Monroetown are eager in education. Maybe the education statues in Monroetown need to improve and the people in it want to improve education extremely; there is not any evidence in the argument, so it can not stand for a standard for a mayor election.
In order to make the conclusion more reasonable, the arguer needs to supply more materials to pursue all of us. |
