TOPIC: ISSUE40 - "Scholars and researchers should not be concerned with whether their work makes a contribution to the larger society. It is more important that they pursue their individual interests, however unusual or idiosyncratic those interests may seem."
Interest is our original drive to plunge into kinds of researches. I believe that scholars and researchers should more concern with their individual interests, because they might make a larger contribution to our society. However, at the same time we have to admit that forces not from individual and social responsibilities propel those great people abandon their interests some times in order to dedicate to researches that can benefit our society.
I indeed can not think of what is more efficient to arouse one person's enthusiasm of science and art than interest. When people addict to some research, he will try his best to do it, forgetting time, hunger etc. Interest, a magical thing, let people find their goal and direction of life, even their real reason they live here. This natural human beings' characteristic almost equals instinct, as people's pursuit for libido. Therefore, for scholars and researchers interests can exploit their potentials furthest on the fields they interest in.
Generally, I do not agree that scholars and researchers give up their individual interests. As words I said above, interests can stimulate researchers' passion, while this kind of passion will lead them to get some great success. Wade, NBA namable superstar, told reporter that " the most crucial reason I became a good basketball player is because I love this game. Since I knew it when I was 4 years old, I knew it is my all. " In fact, most of people who got achievement on kinds of researches are also because they love what they work hard for. Thomas Edison was interested in invention, so he had over one thousand patents; Bill Gates loved computer program, then he dominated the whole software market; Beethoven devoted to music, finally he composed lots of masterpieces. So many celebrities give us this truth that interests absolutely let people gain larger feat on those realms they are interested in. What is power of interest? In my view of point, it likes water drops that are impacting stone under them, no matter what blocks, which will always bore one hole on the stone. This big power is unstoppable.
Nevertheless, scholars and researchers might not research those realms they love thanks to outside forces like individual responsibility, society obligation, ethics, law etc. Usually they must think about how to contribute better to our society. A famous educationist ever came to this theory, " Most of us have not find the field we are most good at, although some of us do his job well at present." He also said, " If we do what I interest, our society will be much more progressive than now. " ..." Maybe Einstein would be more outstanding as a musician than as a scientist." It is utterly possible! Perhaps many scholars and researchers had not gotten a bigger achievement for this, we lost more material and spiritual treasure we had could had too. But fact is not so bad. Imagine technology of clone, if let this scientific group created Dolly continued their research only rely on their interests --- clone different animals even mankind rather than to limited them on ethics and laws, our society may be a mass; Think about atomic power, if we just wanted to make various weapons instead of making use of it to build power station or other aspects that benefit us, our tragedy is never only those dead thousands of Japanese. Those examples tell us that scholars and researchers can not concern with just only individual interests.
In sum, individual interests are really important, but we should pay more attention to human beings' well-being. |
