历史 221"The chief benefit of the study of history is to break down the illusion that people in one period of time are significantly different from people who lived at any other time in history."
With the popularity of movies and TV plays about people’s life in history, human beings are longing to know more about their ancesters—their life style, culture, customs, values and ideals. Studying history can not only reveal the mystery veil of our ancesters, but also can give us much precious experience. In my point of view, I equate the two values of sstudying history.
How did human beings come into being? What living did the people lead in different period of time in history? We are curious about all of the things left by our ancesters. One of the most effective ways to get these information is to study history. Every experts who devote into reveal the veil of history is tremendous source of historical knowledge, including anthropologists and archeologists. By finding and analying the hair, nails, blood and bones of munified bodies, archeologists can unearth the evidence to determine the life span, general well-being, and common cause of death. By identifying the source and age of materials for tools, weapons, and structures, anthropologists can extrapolate about the civilization’s economy, trades and work habits, life styles, extent of travel and mobility. All the wxperts’ research attainment will be apread into the mind of people who want to know more about history. Then, they can tell out what is the same in daily life with their ancesters and what is different. No matter how same or different their curiosity will be met at last by studing history.
Admitted that, breaking down the illusion of people in different period of thime is indeed great benefit of studying history. Nonetheless, it si not the ultimate purpose for us the get information from history. By studying history, we are informed that people lead a hard life in ancient time, who confront endless battle with crual beasts, bad weather, unbearable famine, and so forth. By studying history, we can understand even the most gifted individuals have overcome cuntless difficulties along the path to success, who conquer obstacles, barriers and failures. By studying history, we can know the cause of many disasters which happened due to the over-exploration, deforestation and pullution. Thus, we are trying to advoid committing the same mistakes as our ancesters did through the study of history.
There are two attitude toward the lessons which are drew from history, learning from them or overlooking them. I think almost all of the people will choose the former. Because many things perform periodically, what happened in the past may happened again in the future, especially disasters, diseases. In order to avoid the same disasters happening, we must seek for their root cause. One of the rewarding aspects of studying history is to get useful information about their causes from the same events happened in history. Then apply these knowledge into preventing certain disease. So, too, the diseases caused by human behavior can also be stopped in this way.
In sum, the problem with this statement is that it undervalue one of the aspect and overstate the other, which are equally benefit of studying history.
