TOPIC: ARGUMENT94 - The following appeared in a memo from the president of Bower Builders, a company that constructs new homes.
"A nationwide survey reveals that the two most desired home features are a bathroom with a whirlpool tub and a large kitchen. Homes in a nearby development built by our competitor, Domus Construction, have whirlpool tubs and have sold much faster and at significantly higher prices than the average. To increase our sales and profits, we should include whirlpool tubs and larger kitchens as standard features in all our new homes. Since our recent buyers have voiced no complaints about small yards, we can also increase profits by decreasing the size of our yards."

The memo argues that including whirlpool tubs and large kitchen and decreasing the size of our yards would be benefit for increase the sales and profits. To strengthen this argument the author cites that a national survey reveals most people prefer bathroom with a whirlpool tub and a large kitchen most. The author also point out that Bomus Construction, a nearby building construction company have a higher price than the average in their whirlpools and have a well sale of whirlpools. At last, the author notes that the company has not received any complaints about small yards from their recent clients. The memo is flawed in several aspects.

To begin with, A nationwide survey which told us the two desired home feature are a bathroom with whirlpool and a large kitchen is insufficient to be a support because we do not know how many people and which kind of people be involved in. If only ten people accepted this survey in every city, and only ten cities have this survey proceeded in, the survey would be no useful at all. Even the survey be processed in many cities and gained response from millions peoples,  it is still un insufficient when Bower Builder only do their business in one or to cities which is leaked from this survey list or where less than 100 people received this survey. And the same time, if majority response is form the families which already have a house and do not have a plan to purchase a new one, the survey also have no persuasion. Thus i can not accept the memo on this national survey.

The article’s reliance on the Bomus Construction which sells many whirlpools and ordered a higher prince on it is also problematic in two aspects. First, the author did not give us enough information about Bomus construction in their service field, aim clients school, and main products. Perhaps, Bomus Construction's main business is providing whirlpools for other construction companies. We can not compare the two different business fields from two companies. Second, based on a faster sale, the higher price should have their own reason, like a good quality in several years or completely after-sale service. So Bower Builder could not only focus on the higher price of Bomus whirlpools without the other cost contained by this higher price, such as the service fee and material fee. Thus the mere fact that the nearby Bomus Construction's performance in whirlpools sale lends scant support to the memo.

Finally, the Bower Builder wants to decrease the yards for their clients in the future. In light of the states that the company receives no complaints from recent clients about small yards, the Bower builder's decreasing yards operation is also highly questionable. Recent clients have no complain about the small yards perhaps due to they still do not have long time enough to value this small yards. Besides, we do not know whether there are a lot of complaints from the old clients who bought the house from Bower Builder several years ago. From the most common opinion, the most people prefer not the small yards but a wide one. So, the response from recent clients could not reflect the true view of all the clients about the yards size, especially without any consideration the unknown opinion from clients who have not buy a house.

In conclusion, the memo is poorly supported. To strengthen it the author must convince me that this national survey 's respondent would be the clients of Bower Builder company rather than only people who just give response to survey without any willing to buy a house. And the author must provide the sufficient information about nearby Bomus Construction, so we can know whether the best sale of whirlpools would also emerge in the Bower Builder. Finally, to better assess the memo, the Bower Builder should give the evidence that majority clients, especially the client who bought the house from Bower Builder several years ago, have no complaints for the small yards.
