Issue26 "Most people would agree that buildings represent a valuable record of any society's past, but controversy arises when old buildings stand on ground that modern planners feel could be better used for modern purposes. In such situations, modern development should be given precedence over the preservation of historic buildings so that contemporary needs can be served."
Because I am a city planner, I must present a point of view that no any planner concerns with and prtects history buildings so much as contemporary planner. Generally, to a old building, we will think about many aspects in order to find the best way to deal with it. Preserving old buildings or not depends on social best profit.
It is no doubt that old buildings' value are worthless.
In art, you can find a lot of art patterns from those old buildings that were built in different times and different countries. For example, lots of old churches exist in Europe. There are circle dome presents Baroque, Peak dome presents Gothic etc. Those old buildings are witness of mankind architecture history, present different cultures and ideas. A fantastic building bring people a feeling of beauty, makes people feel so good. Therefore, most people admit this art pattern---- art of architecture.
In emotion, every old building is a memory, reflect people's emotion. Take a example such as Taj Mahal, this majestic palace' value is not only in art but in that it expresses human's eternal issue----love. Taj Mahal is this building that gathered the King's endless love and memory to his wife.
In landscape, many old buildings are so fabulous that you will be attracted by it at your first glance. They combine with other new buildings and nature well, like a whole. Like Forbidden city and Beijing, Ancient Arena and Roma. They have been the local landmark.
In economy, this is the most profitable aspect. Due to above credits, old buildings bring us profits in economy. At present, most tour agencies have many tour lines about old buildings. That is a hot issue. The increasing enthusiasm in tourism about history topics can prove that.
Facing so many advantages of old buildings, it seems that we should try our best to protect them. However, in fact, we must find a balance point between old buildings and modern plan.
History is history, which can not presents now and future. Like wise, to old buildings, we should pay more attention to now and future. In my opinion, an old building, if preserving it is feasible, Ok, we take it; if not, destroy it. I mean, we should preserve old buildings as possible as we can, but when the benefits if we preserve them are less than the benefits if we destroy them for modernization needs, we absolutely should pull them down no matter how valuable they are. Because, human beings live in the world for one thing: benefit ourselves. Regardless of the old buildings' values in art, emotion, landscape or other something, those value's importance are up to human beings.
Consequently, as Edward, king of England, said to his son in movie "Brave heart", "You must find the best beneficial for you from kinds of options." To old buildings, it is the same. |
