Public figures such as actors, politicians, and athletes should expect people to be interested in their private lives. When they seek a public role, they should expect that they will lose at least some of their privacy.
Outlines:
1. For popular stars or artists, they should expect people’s wide interest in almost all aspects of their life with their fans’ zealous fascination and strong mimic desire.
2. For politicians, people’s interests in them are not that strong, still the politicians should know that they are considered as models of the nation.
3. The similar problems for athletes might not be that serious, although they also bring back honor to the nation, due to the short exposure to the public and long time closed training, some are barely known by the public, so their worry about losing privacies would be slight.
After the exposure of photographs of Chief of Hong Kong broadcasting Department at local pub with a glamorous girl yesterday, almost all the newspapers put the news on their front page. Although spoken man from the government exclaims that it is quite normal as a private activity after work, the Chief still make an announcement apologizing for any potential influence. Should public figures expect losing at least some of their privacies when they choose their career path? From my point of view, this is definitely the truth, although the degree of losing privacies might various.
For popular singers or actors, they should definitely expect the public's wide interests in almost all aspects of their life with their fans' zealous fondness and strong mimic desire. From the period from teenagers to the adolescents, there is a common phenomenon that young people become more resistant to their parents or instructors, yet more fascinated to those famous actors or singers. They love their films or songs, mimic their frequently used oral phrases and dressing styles, and want to know every detail in their life off stage, treating these public figures as their idols. One example is Andy Lau, the most attractive and popular star in Hong Kong entertaining industry. No matter where he is, what he is doing, whether his behavior is relevant to its work or not, reporters always follow him and spread any change related to him. To Andy, it is quite clear that his career doesn't belong to himself, but the public who loves his works, and expects the sacrifice of his own privacy once he decided to get in the field. It may be a little bit exaggerate to say that, for popular stars, when no one is interested in your private life, you are out of the step, yet it does reflect the truth. Thus, together with charming laudations, supports and favors from the audience, pubic figures such as singers or actors should be ready to expose their secrets and private life.
For politicians, people's desire to leery their private life may not be that vehement, still, they should always remind themselves as representatives and models of the nation and expect certain degree of privacy loss. As mentioned above, what the Chief of Hong Kong Broadcasting Department has contributed to the development of Hong Kong entertainment industry might not draw our attention. Even if he had made great efforts to push it stepping forward or provide healthy competition environment, such achievements might not strike the public compared to his ramble in the pubs with fancy girl. To some extent, how excellent one politician have done in his position might not interests the public since those are his routine duties, yet as long as there are any sign of improper behaviors in their private life, they may face tremendous condemn from the society. For public figures like politicians, with labeling of decent and deserves admire from the public, should pay special attention to their private life, with any blemish damage their reputation and people's trusts.
Comparatively, for certain other public figures such as athletes, they should not worry too much about losing their private life due to less familiarity from the public. Usually, for an athlete to become a public figure, gold medals and excellent performance in any competitions are necessary. However, facing the challenge from his or her peers and strong competitors around the world, athletes may need to join the training programs for years, with most of the time in a closed stadium and little connection with the outside world. Even during the competitions, they might not come into the audience's focus until in the last few rounds. At the same time, due to the high requirement of physical strength of the body, their competing time is rather limited, with many previous Olympic players turn to work in other careers in their later time. Therefore, with less attention from the public, athletes may not face too many barriers in scooping their private life as long as they are not taking advantage these honors to turn into public figures in other fields. And they may expect less lost of private life.
Taken together, it might be safe for us to draw a conclusion that public figures like actors, politicians, or athletes would lose their privacy to various degrees. As long as one decides to become renown in the field, he has to lose at least some of his privacy as sort of trade off. |
