As common sense, we know that fat people will more tend to snore than thin ones, which on the contrary, the author of this argument recommend that all people snore, should try to eat less and exercise more, relied on a study and some seemingly scientific explanation.
First of all, we are suffering from lack of information about the study collected data, which shows that people who snore are more likely to gain weight than people do not snore. Perhaps these data are collected from a sampled questionnaire of a leisure or life magazine to its subscribers, and the question in the survey may have included "what about your body condition" and "do you snore often". At the same time, we could not exclude that these data collected are from a healthy study institute, whose survey and study have sufficient reliability, due to their scientific method in survey, controlment of the sample: on background, on healthy condition, on age, on lifestyle and so on and wise analysis of the experimental group and controlled group. But lack of details about the data collected, we have the right to suspect the data’s reliability, and further suspect the correctness of the conclusion.
Secondly, the author does not provide any credible evidence to support the cause-effect relationship between the sleep apnea waking the person and the person may be too tired during the day to exercise. Even if some people do not snore will wake up during night for a moment, however, this do not affect the condition of daytime and further not leave them overtired to exercise. Furthermore, even though one may be overtired, one may still do exercise, as he thinks this will make him out of tiredness and be more energetic. These assumption above are based on lack of evidence and detail explanation about the sleep apnea, in my opinion, which is a fallacy in this argument.
Finally, when make a recommendation, the arguer confuses that the identity of people snore and all persons, and what’s more, he also recommend eating less and exercise more, which does not mention above and even involved. Even I concede that the people snore will be more trend to gain weight than others, and the reason for this difference is mainly sleep apnea, the author could not generalize the recommendation which maybe only adapt to snore people to all people no matter they snore or not. As people are different in body condition, lifestyle, etc, and women, children, the elderly varies different in many aspects. Furthermore, we also lack of evidence that eat less and do more exercise will make us far from overweight. Since fatness is a so complex problem that many factors play essential and compositive roles in it, just eat less and exercise more could demonstrate their influence to fatness.
To summarize, this argument’s the largest fallacy is lack of details about the data, explanation about t he sleep apnea, the evidence supporting that the recommendation, which if provided, will complement the defects of it and make this argument convinced. |
