Heroes of the Marshes, which is considered as one of the four greatest work pieces in China, in fact, is not the original edition written by the initial author Luo Guanzhong but the adapted edition of Jin Shengtan-- a critic. Many people still believe that is the reason why the book can be preserved until now and listed in the history. According to my own experience and knowledge ken, without artists there would be no works of art of any sort, meanwhile, the critics discover the artists and their works, then the really precious arts could be preserved and benefit to the present people and society and the followings.
On the one hand, artists undoubtedly give us much pleasure, beauty, as well as instruction which may last for a long period of time. Across the history of Eastern and Western civilization, there have been more than a few formulations of what the artists bring into the society, but I will only focus on two there. Analects of Confucius, records of the indoctrination and instruction of Confucius paraphrased by his prentices, is regarded as a mental bible in China for more than two thousand years. In feudal society, many emperors valued this book very much and honored Confucius as "Kong zi"( in ancient China, only great figures which considered had made implacable and tremendous efforts to the nation or society could be called "zi", and "Kong" is Confucius's family name). His Confucianism influenced both common people and heroes in mentalities and life values in different dynasties. Van Gogh, the eliminate painter of impressionism, although sold only one his paintings in his entire career, two of his still life paintings have recently broken all records in selling for $50 million. More importantly, his reflection about the meaning of arts always reminds artists in multifarious societies and different eras of concerning the essence of beauty, arts and life. Out of question, he has been bringing unbelievable and lasting clout on the conception of beauty as well as the collection of art.
On the other hand, critics contribute to the society as well in a great degree. For one thing, critics discover, estimate and then give us common people some professional recommendations on distinct subjects including poetry, music, sculpture, architecture and so on. Based on these recommendations, we are able to appreciate those various arts forms more intensively, and then find out what will be more valuable to ourselves. For another thing, critics also weed many immature and rough productions away, then we can spend more energy, time and funds in cherishing what have lasting values and meanings to us not only as individuals but also as members of society. Furthermore, critics can be an immense help to artists in acquiring more information about what will be accepted or rejected by the mass, according to their enormous experience and specific knowledge of both profession and psychology.
Artists create rainbow, while critics enrich its hues; artists excavate valuable mineral, then critics grind it into a priceless diamond; artists plant an oak, so critics nourish it to scrape into the sky. In short, artists and critics are just like two legs of a human body, only with both of them can the body—society go far.
