TOPIC: ISSUE70 - "In any profession-business, politics, education, government-those in power should step down after five years. The surest path to success for any enterprise is revitalization through new leadership."

According to the statement those in power should step down after five years in any profession. In my view the speaker unfairly generalizes. In some areas, such as business, change the leader periodically would make the company more competent. However, in other areas, especially the education, it is not necessary for those in power to leave their original place after 5years. In still other areas, especially politics, whether a periodic leader takes advantages than long-term leader varies from case to case.

With the rapid progress in science and technology, the pace in business become more and more rapidly and the span form research to selling a new product become more and more short. If the change and improvement of a kind of product fall behind, the company may become incompetent in the market and suffer a great loss. Accordingly, the business leader must keep a fresh ideas and has greater initiative to make their company keep in pace with the period. As a famous enterpriser once said: “the only thing that does not change in our company is change itself." When individuals get the power in a company, they would adopt many new deals to change the company to establish their fame and career, however, after some years, they often become conservative and refuse to change the original deals in order to maintain their established authority and reputation. Therefore, change the leader periodically is reasonable in business.

By contrast, in the realm of education, changes are not so frequent and periodical leader may not fit an educational administration or a university. Since the cultivating of students is a long-term project, any short and inconstant program of it would bring cost to the educatee. Unfortunately, the change of headmasters of colleges in China is so frequent that many of them tries their best in the cost of sacrifice keeping original educational standard to make the ostensible progress in the term of enlarge the number of students and construct new buildings. To better maintain the good tradition, we should prolong the term of leaders in the fired of education.

In the realm of politics, the surest path to success depends on specific case. In an instable age, we need long-term leader to guide us walk through mire while in a conservative age, we need periodic leading with highly enthusiasm and bring about fresh blood to maintain the revitalization. In any case, the limitation of five years for a leader is too rigid as it fails to consider the special demand of a certain period. In the period of World War 2, Roosevelt keep his power until his death for the stability of American, in the ancient China, the leader of each county exchange their position each three years to avoid corruption. All above are fully taking into consider the needs of the society and therefore receive positive consequences.

To sum up, the speaker overlooks many fields, particular the education and politics, in which periodic leaders are not superior to long-term leader. Nevertheless, other fields, especially business, change the leader in time is necessary.
