We have to concede the significant role of individuals in the evolution of history since they greatly promote the social development through certain events. Nevertheless, we should also be objective to recognize that large group of public are the real creators of history. Their common requires reflect the possibility and necessity of social revolution. Moreover, without their participation and assistance, hardly can the famous few get the chance to accomplish the historical missions.
First of all, individuals who involved in the most profound events and trends are of great importance in history. They are not only the promoter of new historical trend but also drive the human civilization and modernization pacing forward with their distinguished knowledge-vision, courage, sense of justice, hard work as well as their superb leadership skills. There is a good example in point, the prominent US presidents Roosevelt once implemented the New Deal which helped the whole country out of the adverse influence of Depression--the most destructive economic crisis in US history, and greatly revitalized the economic development which also pose advantageous effect on the global economy. There are numerable similar events which change the outline of the country or the whole world with the endeavor of the great individuals. For that matter, we can see the indispensable and outstanding role of individuals who exerted brilliant influence in history.
However, the glorious achievement of famous few can not blind us to the real creator of history, that is, the public. As we all know any revolution and change of society does not come suddenly without any prediction and internal cause. The inner incentive of the social change lies in the unsatisfied public needs which may threaten the social harmony and stability for a long time period and finally lead to the violent revolution or dramatic change. Take the American civil war for instance, through the thorough analysis, it is easy to find that the real motivation for breaking out of civil war is to eliminate the slavery which obstructed the improvement of machinery industry that aims to enhance the economic development to maximize the common interests of public. Whereas the participation of the most estimable presidents Lincoln does not change the development of American history in the fundamental basis, but, to some extent, speeds the pace of development. That means without the existence of Lincoln, civil war is still sure to come out to address the very needs of public. Therefore we can assess confidently to the conclusion that the large group of people in certain society, rather than the famous few, determines the occurrence of significant events and the direction of social trend.
In addition, the large group of people also lends powerful support as well as the necessary assistant to the individual to help them achieve their historical missions. It is true that no matter how strong the power possessed by individuals, they still far more away form being competent to resist the strong authority all by themselves. The leader of Chinese Communists Mao Zedong is a paradigmatic example for this point. In order to overturn the feudalism and imperialism of China, he united and leaded the farmers and workers which constitute the largest group of people in society to fight for freedom. With the support and help of them, he finally established the bright new China. Hence the group of people would greatly assist individuals to make the significant events and trends possible without which any individual would doom to fail from the very beginning
In sum, we have to keep an objective and impartial mind to evaluate the role of individual in history. When facing the most significant events and trends in history, we should be aware of the importance of famous few but also pay more attention to the large group of people who would be responsible for any reform and change in history and help the individual to fulfill their historical missions. |
