Should most effective political leaders yield to public opinion for the sake of compromise, as the speaker asserts? I tend to disagree. While I concede that in numerous circumstances politicians need to yield to public opinion, in other cases effective leader have to stick to their principles and moreover, I think that a leader’s effectiveness has little to do with whether he/she yield to public.

Admittedly, in a democratic society where any leader is elected and supervised by all the people, compromising to public ideas and values is required for any politician to be a leader. Seen from some angle, one significant responsibility of top leaders just lies in making balance between groups, parties, classes that holds different opinions and people are willing to support and step on to vote for politicians whose opinion or policy coincide with theirs by natures. For instance, at the time when people complain about high tax and claim to reduce it, candidates whose policy goes in the same way to lower tax takes advantage than those who do not. And seen from these years election it is not hard to find out that winners are usually those whose opinion follows the people’s, which are not the politicians’ original opinions all the times.

However, to be a effective, sometimes only yielding to public opinion is not sufficient and even may be harmful to both politicians and society. One reason I base my view on lies in that as my observation, public opinions usually varies in different social groups and classes which means if politicians need to find some opinion to yield to, he/she must take risk. If he/she makes wrong choice, then opponents holding different ideas may give great pressure, which, sometimes may be harmful to one’s political career. The other reason for my view has something to do with the definition of effectiveness. As I see, to be a effective one leader must meet public demand by taking measures and reforms when needed. But there are always opponent sounds to any reforms or new plans which need politicians to stick to their opinions more than to totally change to opinions of those opponents. Otherwise any reform, especially those hard but valuable ones, could get success.

After deeper reflection, I tend to disagree with the speaker in the respect that one politician’s effectiveness is related to whether he/she yield to public opinions. In fact, in my view, the best criteria to measure a leader effectiveness is the extent to which he/she finish the job and task given by society and people. And the way one leader get to it seems less important when it is not beyond the standard of legal system and moral, and the most significant thing for politicians is to make right choices. However, by claiming that leader should stick to their own opinions I do not mean leaders need not to listen to public opinion. Sometimes they are not mutual exclusive because by propagandism politicians’ opinion may change publics’ and vice verse, in which case the opinion’s of the two coincide.

To sum up,

Should most effective political leaders yield to public opinion for the sake of compromise, as the speaker asserts? I tend to disagree. While I concede that in numerous circumstances politicians need to yield to public opinion, in other cases effective leader have to stick to their principles and moreover, I think that a leader’s effectiveness has little to do with whether he/she yield to public.

Seen from some angle, one significant responsibility of top leaders just lies in making balance between groups, parties, classes that holds different opinions and people are willing to support and step on to vote for politicians whose opinion or policy coincide with theirs by natures[by nature].

To sum up,
