ISSUE 120--"So much is new and complex today that looking back for an understanding of the past provides little guidance for living in the present."

The speaker alleges that looking back into the history offers us little guidance for living in the present. It hints that we do not require a rear-view mirror to recognize our society, while in certain circumstances it is reasonable since some phenomena might not have ever occurred in the history and thus we learn nothing from past such as the flood of Severe Acute Respiratory  Syndrome (SARS). However, I still find this allegation to be specious. In fact, studying history provides inspiration, innumerable lessons for living, and nurtures new value and perspective--all of which endow us to decide how to live our lives.

To begin with, learning about honorable accomplishments from the past offers us inspiration to pursue further achievements. For example, an entrepreneur inspired by the courage and tenacity of history's great president Roosevelt Franklin Delano, who assumed presidency at the depth of the Great Depression and World War II, might decide as a result to solve the enduring problems in his or her own company. This decision can, in turn, profoundly affect that entrepreneur's daily life-in the corporation and beyond. Even for those ordinary people who rarely have the opportunity to deal with such a mess, studying historical examples of courage in the face of adversity can provide motivation to face their own personal fears in life. In short, inspired by the spirit of grand achievements in the past can enable us to get through the everyday business of living, whatever that business might be, by emboldening us and lifting our spirits.

In addition, failure in the history can serve as a stern teacher teaching us how to avoid similar mistakes. One apt illustration of this point of view involves the so called "Star Wars" defense initiative, championed by the Reagan Administration during 1980s. In retrospect, the initiative was ill-conceived and largely a waste of taxpayer dollars; and few would dispute that the exorbitant amount of money devoted to the initiative might have gone a long way toward addressing pressing social problems, by establishing after-school programs for delinquent latchkey kids, by enhancing AIDS awareness and education, and so forth. As it turns out, at the end of the Star Wars we were left with rampant gang violence, AIDS epidemic, and unprecedented federal budget deficit. Thus, this history has helped us learn the appropriateness of addressing certain social issues, and how to strike a balance among competing societal objective. Fortunately, as a society we can apply this lesson by adopting a more practical program for the welfare of our dispirited, disadvantaged, and disenfranchised social members to avoid such failure again.

At last but not least, History has been always recur itself which ultimately has melted into the society as a whole. Currently a thing with a new looking is in great part possible to be an offspring of the old ones to some extent in mutation or remix. Although the concept of democracy is widespread accepted in the whole world in the past two hundred yeas, we are easily find an old counterpart in the Old Greece and the Old Rome Republic about two thousand years ago. In those times Roman people select candidates by slating while today we vote in public selecting the leader of our own country. It is so similar that we may regard current selective systems as a good mimicry on the basis of the understanding of the past. Also in field of fashion, nowadays new looking ones can easily give way to the more fashion ones in the face of the historical fashion concepts or elements--clearly illustrated by the development of the brand Christian Dior. Thus, our rich and varied modern world is by no means of a mere construction of neologism but a combination of historical factors.

In sum, the speaker fails to recognize that in all our activities and decisions-- from our grandest to our most rote-- history can inspire, inform, guide, nurture, and even be pregnant with new modern ideals. To some extent, the influence of history is unconsciously permeate in our every facet of daily life which cannot be easily separate as the speaker asserts.

欢迎大家来拍我篇文章 超级冗长开头+二段论~~hoho 我发现我还是不到黄河心不死阿 总是抱有侥幸心理

ISSUE 147 - "Tradition and modernization are incompatible. One must choose between them."
Contemporary society can sometimes be portrayed as dominated by the experience of modernization. The rapid speed of technological innovation, urbanization and industrialization are from time to time changing our perspective of space, time and the rhythm of our lives. At the same time, burgeoning various cultures, meteoric form of art, fickleness of the audience are continually challenging or encroaching the traditional values. Then we inevitably encounter a controversy: How to treat the relationship between modernization and tradition. Must we choose either between tradition and modernization, as the speaker contends? I agree that in some circumstances especially relating to the culture and moral values the two are mutually exclusive. For the most part in other field, however, modernization does not reject tradition; in fact, in many cases the former can and does embrace the latter.

I concede that in certain instances, tradition must yield entirely to the utilitarian needs of modern life, especially in the field of culture and moral values. One apt illustration involves the Confucianism which was treated as authoritative and widespread in China for several thousand years. As Confucianism persisted, one should be eclectic and never become a maverick. A proverb, which best express the essential of Confucianism and is held by many Chinese as their tenet, is "outstanding trees will be destroyed by the wind." However, referring this thought with modern perceptive, it prohibits people from pursuing the desire in their soul and impede the sparks of creativity. Though more or less eroding by the time, the vestige can still be identified, especially when an American professor find that a few among his or her Asian students are extremely shy and reticent. Such thoughts were to some extent reasonable in the tyrannical times, including the feudal periods and the duration of Chairman Mao. However, we should recognize that conservativeness no long suit to the situation now and therefore, reevaluate the traditional values, reject the outmoded ones or coordinate them to the development of the human society to keep in better touch with the changing time.

Oftentimes, so-called "modernization" is actually an extension or new iteration of tradition, or a variation on it. Currently a thing with a new looking by name of "modernization" is in great part possible to be an offspring of the old tradition to some extent in certain field--such as law, fashion, and language. Although the concept of democracy is widespread accepted in the whole as the symbol for advanced modern world in the past two hundred yeas, we are easily find an old counterpart in the Old Greece and the Old Rome Republic about two thousand years ago. In those times Roman people select candidates by slating while today we vote in public selecting the leader of our own country. It is so similar that we may regard current selective systems as a good iteration on the basis of the tradition. Further, even if in other areas modernization departs from tradition in some respects, while embracing it in others. In the visual arts, for example, so-called "modern" designs, forms, and elements are also based on some timeless aesthetic ideals--such as symmetry, balance, and harmony-- and on some enduring spirit of art---self awareness, self examination and self questioning. Admittedly, modern art works often eschew these principles in favor of novelty. Yet, in my view the appeal of such works lies primarily in their brashness and unpredictable. Once the ephemeral novelty or shock dissipates, these works quickly lose their appeal because they violate firmly established artistic ideals.

The speaker of such a claim seems oversimplify the relationship between tradition and modernization and draw a cursory conclusion. We should evaluate traditional values and modern values first and judge whether they are incompatible. In sum, it needs case-by-case analysis.

指出一点,记得last but not least是口语多用,不太正式。
