ISSUE 120--"So much is new and complex today that looking back for an understanding of the past provides little guidance for living in the present."
The speaker alleges that looking back into the history offers us little guidance for living in the present. It hints that we do not require a rear-view mirror to recognize our society, while in certain circumstances it is reasonable since some phenomena might not have ever occurred in the history and thus we learn nothing from past such as the flood of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). However, I still find this allegation to be specious. In fact, studying history provides inspiration, innumerable lessons for living, and nurtures new value and perspective--all of which endow us to decide how to live our lives.
To begin with, learning about honorable accomplishments from the past offers us inspiration to pursue further achievements. For example, an entrepreneur inspired by the courage and tenacity of history's great president Roosevelt Franklin Delano, who assumed presidency at the depth of the Great Depression and World War II, might decide as a result to solve the enduring problems in his or her own company. This decision can, in turn, profoundly affect that entrepreneur's daily life-in the corporation and beyond. Even for those ordinary people who rarely have the opportunity to deal with such a mess, studying historical examples of courage in the face of adversity can provide motivation to face their own personal fears in life. In short, inspired by the spirit of grand achievements in the past can enable us to get through the everyday business of living, whatever that business might be, by emboldening us and lifting our spirits.
In addition, failure in the history can serve as a stern teacher teaching us how to avoid similar mistakes. One apt illustration of this point of view involves the so called "Star Wars" defense initiative, championed by the Reagan Administration during 1980s. In retrospect, the initiative was ill-conceived and largely a waste of taxpayer dollars; and few would dispute that the exorbitant amount of money devoted to the initiative might have gone a long way toward addressing pressing social problems, by establishing after-school programs for delinquent latchkey kids, by enhancing AIDS awareness and education, and so forth. As it turns out, at the end of the Star Wars we were left with rampant gang violence, AIDS epidemic, and unprecedented federal budget deficit. Thus, this history has helped us learn the appropriateness of addressing certain social issues, and how to strike a balance among competing societal objective. Fortunately, as a society we can apply this lesson by adopting a more practical program for the welfare of our dispirited, disadvantaged, and disenfranchised social members to avoid such failure again.
At last but not least, History has been always recur itself which ultimately has melted into the society as a whole. Currently a thing with a new looking is in great part possible to be an offspring of the old ones to some extent in mutation or remix. Although the concept of democracy is widespread accepted in the whole world in the past two hundred yeas, we are easily find an old counterpart in the Old Greece and the Old Rome Republic about two thousand years ago. In those times Roman people select candidates by slating while today we vote in public selecting the leader of our own country. It is so similar that we may regard current selective systems as a good mimicry on the basis of the understanding of the past. Also in field of fashion, nowadays new looking ones can easily give way to the more fashion ones in the face of the historical fashion concepts or elements--clearly illustrated by the development of the brand Christian Dior. Thus, our rich and varied modern world is by no means of a mere construction of neologism but a combination of historical factors.
In sum, the speaker fails to recognize that in all our activities and decisions-- from our grandest to our most rote-- history can inspire, inform, guide, nurture, and even be pregnant with new modern ideals. To some extent, the influence of history is unconsciously permeate in our every facet of daily life which cannot be easily separate as the speaker asserts.
