Does looking back for an understanding of the past provide little guidance for living in the present? As far as I am concerned, though it is true that things today have changed significantly from the old time. It is still indispensable for us to look into the past for the guidance of current living.

Admittedly, with the fast development of science and technology, people are now facing challenges that our ancestors never encountered with. Currently, the wide spread internet, which significantly modifies the modern communication patterns, is bringing convenience as well as problems. E-mails, instant messages and online phones, make the communication so easy that people are sticking themselves to the virtual world, rather than spending time with relatives and neighbors in real life. What's more, while shifting the attention to the online people whose real identity is even absent, people are alienating their close friends in daily life. As a result, the more we reliant on the internet, the more we are suffering from inside loneliness. However, ancient people seldom experience this psychological isolation, because without the distraction of modern communication, they would spend most of the time with their family and friends, and share happiness together. From this point, I concede that some brand new problems do not have counterparts in the past.

However, while admitting that some problems are unprecedented today, one should still not neglecting that most problems in modern society are similar to those in the past, especially those are driven from human nature. Thousands of years have past since the emergence of first human tribe, the uneven distribution of resources and power is still causing conflicts. However, rather than fight  with each other as the predecessors did in World War One and World War Two, which cursed every nation with pain, starvation and poverty, people are now recognizing that wars can never put question to an end, and taking peaceful negotiation as an effective measure to solve international conflicts. Thanks to looking back into the painful lessons of wars, the society is now enjoying the best stability and fastest development in human history.

Furthermore, the core of scientific development is hardly changed. First, though the research subjects are extended to countless area, much more than in the ancient time which had only philosophy, all the themes of scientific research are still in pursuit of the final truth of the world. Second, while with using the most advanced equipments and facilities, researchers are following the essential principles set by their outstanding forerunner, Galileo, who formulates results through exact observations and experiments. Third, even when starting a new theory that never occurred in human history, it is still necessary to learn from the past. For instance, my research group is working on a new subject named virtual fire escaping system, a interdisciplinary subject derived from computer science, architecture and psychology. By the mass reading in relating documents, We not only benefit from the inspiration of different researches, but also learn a lot from the methods of how to solve problems, which are essential to the final success. The width and depth of scientific development is ever growth, but the essence of former research is never out of date.

In conclusion, although today is quite different from the past, it is still beneficial for us to learn from yesterday. By examine the fallacies and absorbing the experiences from history, human can achieve a better development in the future.
