A new phenomenon has taken place over the recent years in china—the popularity of Chinese traditional costum which is represented by the clothes people wearing in Han dynasty. Even many fashionable young men and women are fans of the traditional costume.This phenonmenon implies that an increasing number of people in China are beginning to switch their attention from modern civilization to the value of history. In my opinion, if one wants to know much about a society’s ideas and values, observing the appearance and behavior of its people is one of the effective ways, except for some special cases.
People’s attitudes and interests, the most important part of an individual’s valubale system, have outer expression, like the way they look, dress and act to the world. Let us imagine how we begin to know a stranger. We must focus on his appreance at the first sight--namely, his clothes, hair style, little ornaments, and so forth. Clothes can to great extent represent one’s wealth, social status, the sense of fasion,even attitude toward the world. A rich young woman’s preference to homely clothes indicates that he lay little stress on his apprearance but the on the inner beauty. if we can not tell the person‘s attitude and interest at the first glance as easy as quickly, the way his act and look will soon show us more information about his personal characteristics. Could any spectacle, for instance, be more stronger to reveal an individual’s attitude to protect environment than his behavior of picking up garbages and throwing them into the garbage can. People’s valuable system is based on their attitudes and interests, which can to some extent represent the society’s idea and values.
The whole society consists of millions of such individuals—the young women , environmental protector, and so on. People’s attitudes and interests can reveal the society’s ideas and values, for these individuals are the members of the society. As we all know, French are famous for their romantic attitudes toward the world. Paris is the center of fasion world and French men are the most romantic men in the world. A majority of people equate romantic with France. There is no denying that all this evaluation are based on the way French dress or act. Another case in point is korean who are very loyal to their history. On most improtant occasions, korean tend to wear their traditional costum, which tells us that they respect their history and ancesters. It is not wiser to joke about their history ahead of a krean. Many people like to travel to other places to feel the different social customs and value by getting along with its people. According to the observation of people’s behavior and appearance, tourists can know the society’s ideas and values, and then they will adjust themselves to the society as soon as possible, without breaking some local tabooes。
However, there are also exceptional cases in which what people wear and act only represent themselves. These special cases have little meaning in judging the society’s ideas and values. No need look no further than the working clothes of farmers, wearing jeans or other serviceable clothes does not indicate that these clothes are popular among the whole society, but only due to the serviceable properties of these clothes. Furthermore, we can not safely conclude that the whole Japanese society hold a hostile attitude toward Chinese people, just because some individuals refuse to admit their criminal act during the aggressive war. As the old saying goes, don’t be overshadowed by a piece of leaves and fail to see the whole forests. These unwelcome behavior is only special case, which can not represent the whole society’s ideas and values.
In conclusion, every one has their own appetie toward dress or behavior. However, there must be a general trend which is greatly reveal the society’s ideas and values. Meanwhile, we should tell these ideas and values from a big picture instead of focusing of special cases.
