Some people hold the assertation that in the past, many species were eliminated by the pressure of nature, therefore, the extincted or extincting species at present are also the results of nature, so we have no reason and duty in saving endangered species, especially at the cost of great money and jobs. I totally object this viewpoint. In my opinion, we are responsible to save all endangered species.
The competition and elimination principle is the dominating rule of nature. Some species adapt the environment well and swiftly, so they proliferate into large numbers and thus occupy large quantities of resources. Other species may evolved rather slowly, so they gradually lose the competition and is doomed to extinct sooner or later. It is universally acknowledged that this cruel and yet just rule dominates the evolving and developing of the whole biosphere. As human beings, we have no responsibility of their extinction. However, it does not deny us the duty to save them for many reasons, the moral ones, the aesthetic ones and the economic ones. We are taught from our childhoods that each life is respectable, so our moral standards will force and guide us when facing the endangered species. Moreover, all of the species are artifacts of the nature, by saving them, we may learn more about our Earth. Still, chances are that these species have some unique features which would achieve great commercially.
However, no one can evade the debt that, at present, most extincted and extincting species are the sour fruits of human activities. From the very ancient time, our ancestors hunted mammoths ruthlessly, although someone may protest that ancient people have no idea of their behaviors, but the fact of mammoths' extinction can not be reversed. Nowadays, few species die out as quays, but far more number of them are extirpated due to the change of environment. Many chemical substances were discharged into air, water and soil, hence they disturb and alter the environment suddenly and drasticly. Thus species numbers plummet. Furthermore, the food chains and food webs are changed, so more and more species get involved. Facing these inconvenient yet undeniable truth, we have no excues but to save the endangered species no matter what great cost of money and jobs.
In sum, we do have justifications to make extraordinary efforts to prevent species from elimination. Still, the outcomes of these deeds may well compensate and outnumber the money and jobs spent. |
