I strongly agree that technologies make great impact on social customs and ethics, as the speaker maintains. Admittedly, scientific discoveries and technological advances have produced tremendous changes not only in human’s material life but also spiritual life. Yet, in my view, the speaker makes hasty generalization that technologies determine social customs and ethics. The affect that culture and surroundings play is merely masked or suspended.

First and foremost, as we look back upon the history, we can see how profoundly science and technology have changed our lives. Consider, for example, the introduction of mechanization and various technologies in agriculture. It effectively lessened the burdens of human’s struggle for survival. In industry, with so many technology innovations such as steam engine which inaugurate the Industrial Revolution, people were freed from burdensome labor and enjoyed a relative comfortable life.

Secondly, besides the impact on human’s material life, the technologies influence social customs and ethics as well. For instance, the notion that women should stay at home, taking care of elders, and nurturing children were completely changed after the Industrial Revolution. It was the technology advances that make this change possible. As a result, women went out of home and began their careers, even made brilliant achievement. In addition, tele-communication tools such as the telephone, fax and Internet, which have increasingly replaced “paper letter”, have become the major means of communicating.

Thirdly, with the development of science and technology, the human ethical system is also being affected simultaneously. Unfortunately, most impacts it brings to our ethical system are unhealthy even precarious. By accepting the permeation of technology into our ethical system we find ourselves on a slippery slope toward sanctioning some actions or ideas that used to be unethical or immoral before. Consider the controversial idea of human cloning. Though the idea seemed to be extremely crazy and unethical because its devaluation of human life. Some scientists are still attempting to work on it.

However, despite the content mentioned above, we still should not make hasty generalization that technologies determine social customs and ethics. Culture and surroundings plays a more important role in determine social customs and ethics. The reason in that social custom and ethics are superstructures and social ideology that are determined by several economic basis. Established and maintained by vox populi, traditional customs and inward believes, they are psychological consciousness and principles that people rely on while evaluating human actions. The concept of social custom and ethics mentioned above tells us that they cannot be determined by technologies. Consequently, we should control the progress of technology according to social custom and ethics and avoid the destruction of ethical system. On the other hand, laws and regulations should be available to check the technology that will develop without limitation. At the same time, healthy guidance will make good use of technological advances. A current example that the cloning technology used in medical treatment can account for this. It will bring comfort and bliss to human life.

In sum, I assert that the technologies can influence the social custom and ethics yet cannot determine them. Furthermore, we should determine the progress of some technologies by social custom and ethics. And in any event, technology is never reasonable when the lives or safeties of human beings are jeopardized as a result.

There are so many heros admired by societies are not real-life figure but a imaginative one. And it is impractical to research the characteristic of a society through them.

The issue mentioned in the title puts too much influence on technology that it not only gives impact on the customs and ethics but also determine them. Although it is impossible to neglect the overwhelming influence of the technologies, they, in fact, are not be able to determine the social customs or ethics instead of our human beings.

At the very beginning, with the fast development of the great technologies innovated and set around us, technology, without doubt, brings human beings the great changes in every corner of their lives. Nowadays, it is not a rare thing or a phenomenon to find some people walking on the street and talking with their friends via the mobile technology. Also, writing an email on the internet to make a fast and immediate commutation with a friend is quite common thing happened every minute of time. Moreover, watching a live concert or even the World Cup of football via simply turning on the television could be easily realized by the live broadcasting system. Thanks to all these innovated technologies, it really brings us people a much better life and makes people lives much more convenient rather than any time before the revolution of industrial innovation. Therefore, admittedly, technologies in reality change and influence people live style to some extent. Suppose if there is no technology used and no benefit taken from it, how would our human beings conquer the inundation during the heavy raining season? And how can people explore the new and mystical outer space without a spacecraft? And how do people cure the disease such like SARS which used to be a pandemic heavy disease happened around the world in 2003?

Let's go to deeper on the issue that how does the technology influence the social customs and ethics. Like mentioned above, the television nowadays still stands in the rank as the number in the mass media promulgation which everyday broadcasting such as the recent news, soup opera, movies, music and so on. According to a national survey taken in England, it tells that the more than 70% men spending 5 hours on television on average, while women, comparing to men, spending 3.5 hours per day. Not just in England, people around the world are spending lot of time watching TV due to its fast transmission and appealing programs such as American Idol and Annual Grammy Awards. Comparing this kind of entertainment life to the one before any electric era, life without television is much simple and easy. And nowadays, people using the mobile phones to communicate with their friends or families are enjoying a completely convenient life rather than any time before. This modern way of communication essentially influences people's way of exchanging minds and ideas which in the old time people only made it through writing mails and doing visiting.

However, technology is not able to determine the social customs and ethics even though it plays a vital role in human's daily lives.  Acting as a doubled-sword, technology in one side does much contribution to the world and make a great of benefits to human beings, but in another side it brings us the upcoming problems such as global warming, the electronics rubbish and so on. As far as we know, social customs and ethics are referring to the human behaviors, propriety and living styles. Undoubtedly, technology is influencing our human's living style and doing harm to our traditions nowadays. However, essentially, technologies in reality are not being able to determine the ethics which only can be set and passed down by human beings. For instance, the famous Chinese traditional festival setting as a family gathering every year, to some extent like the Christmas in European countries, is a passing down festival from ancient China. And practically nowadays, people who living in the modern technology world are not paying much attention to it rather than any time before. Surfing on the internet while not watching the CCTV spring festival show, eating out in the restaurants while not cooking at home and singing Karaoke while not frequently visiting their relatives, are modern people's best choices. Admittedly, technology makes a contribution in changing people's living style and raises a contradiction between the tradition and modern culture. However, we still can not be able to give a conclusion that technology determines social customs and ethics.

In sum, with the contribution and benefits brought by the great technologies, people's daily lives and living styles are being challenged now and then. And technology really has its merit in facilitating human life and living style comparing with any other ancient time before. However, what human people must remember that social customs and ethics are made and generated by our human beings, while not the new technology innovated by them.
