With the fabulously rapid development in globalization and mass media, scandals in any field cannot be easily concealed like ever before, and the effects of a scandal sometimes may overweight the significance of the issue itself. The speaker above asserts that scandals manage to focus the attention of the public on problems in ways that speaker and reformer could hardly succeed. However, I cannot agree with the speaker totally, despite of public effect of scandals, if not treat it seriously, scandals would hamper the progress of the society rather than expedite.(很漂亮的开头)
On one hand, admittedly, scandals can, to some extent, reveal some social problems that could hardly be disclosed under common circumstances, which renders(应该是render) the public and government to pay attention to the issues that they ignored and that may give rise to the greater loss to the fruits of civilization and democracy. A case cite(是cited) often is the Watergate Affair. Nixon, one of the most remarkable and excellent presidents of United States, used to be considered as a man of wise, integrity and honesty.(remarkable, excellent, integrity, honesty几个词用的太好了) However, after the Watergate Affair, the public recognized another side of his personality, and then realized the importance of the political leaders’ moral standards. Nixon's case discloses the neglect of the ethic quality of the political leaders, which the government failed to call the attention of the public on. Under this circumstance, scandal embodies its positive effects and improves the political system.
On the other hand, overemphasis on scandals sometimes may obscure the merits of the persons involved. The public is always curious about the lives of celebrities, and they tend to probe the privacy and disgraceful affairs more than the common political and government news. Naturally, the public are interested in the ways that great figures commit mistakes. As universally acknowledged, scandals usually concern about illegal behaviors, incorrect sex, and bribery etc, thus people will pay more attentions to the scandals. Take the former U.S. president Bill Clinton for example. His unwise sexual behavior with Monica Lewinsky sparked a great deal of objection against his government. Admittedly, Clinton should be responsible for this affair, yet it did not follow that he is not qualified to be the president. After all during the years of his administration, Americans enjoyed a steady rise in economy and life quality. Despite of his sex scandal, the remarkable performance of Clinton should not be overshadowed. Meanwhile, when it comes to the scandals, the public should keep a critical thinking to make an objective judgment. To error is human, let alone the celebrities who have to bear greater pressure than the ordinary people.
What's more, if unreasonably treated, scandals may lead to some unnecessary issues and controversies, which sometimes might eventually end up in a tragedy. To illustrate this point of view, one has to look no further than Kelly affair in Britain a few months ago. Kelly, one of the government specialists who had conducted the investigation on the weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, committed a suicide after being reported by BBC that he revealed the information on the investigation which directly leaded to the war in Iraq. He could hardly bear the pressures and questions from the public and the government after that report, although he was proved innocent afterwards. The irresponsible report of BBC should be the main factor to his death. Therefore, when facing the scandals, people should keep a fresh mind, because some of the reports and the news lack the authenticity and reliability, which will only mislead the public and bring about the pressure to the people involved. In this sense, although attracting the attention of the public, scandals can hardly be considered as positive to the society. On the contrary, it brings about damage even destruction to the sound and sustained development of the society.
To sum up, scandal is a two-edged sword, which plays an indispensable role in the social life of both the public and the celebrities. Although it can attract more attention of the public and government than the reformers and speakers can, the negative effects of it sometimes may overweight its positive side, since too much emphasis on the scandal will result in unnecessary pressure to the involvers and the misunderstanding of the public. However, the public focus on the scandals will meanwhile supervise and regulate the behaviors of the celebrities, which may do good to guarantee a favorable social environment and a healthy development.
