Can technologies influence even determine social customs and ethics? I agree insofar as technologies greatly influence on social customs and ethics. However, it is a bit arbitrary to recognize social custom and ethics are determined by technologies. To sum up, technologies play a significant role in our society and social custom and ethics are influenced by them as well as traditional culture and history.

Technologies are influence social customs and ethics to some extent, just like graver which ingeniously carves social custom and ethics. With this “graver”, social custom and ethics which are gradually changed has the most vivid character - more civilized and artistic. Consider, for example, in ancient China, people were convinced their ancestors are still live in another world; therefore they sacrificed livestock, even sacrificed people in some noblest class, for sacrificial rites every year in order to display their filial respect. However, with the development in technology, they are realized the life process, from birth to death, and are cognizant of the most valuable filial respect is show consideration for their parents before they leave the world or adopt a gentle mode to commemorate deceased - placed flowers in the front of the gravestone. That is not a special case. Each person can look around the society we exist and effortlessly find the productions of technologies make our life more colorful and change with each passing day. The Email let us forget letter bit by bit; the coal and wood time have gone for that the electricity and natural gas are more convenient for cooking; and we cannot overlook the fact that airplane shortens our distance. In short, technologies totally appear in every corner and have permeated in our life, so it is greatly influence social customs and ethics.
  
Notwithstanding the technologies provided with tremendous influence, we should not ignore a society’s traditional culture which is shaped by significant events and exerts a subtle influence on the social custom and ethics. Diet habit is an apt example to illustrate this point. Technologies change the instruments, increase the breed of vegetables, and invent the additives to make our food more delicious, but they cannot change our diet habit. For Chinese, they would like sit with their families and enjoy ordinary food rather than sit in the restaurant where provided with more delicious food and saving people’s labor. Another particularly notable case of this is “bow”. Japanese meet and always construct the gift of bowing each other at ordinary times, even with the rapid development in science and technology, they still stick to this traditional courtesy action. Conspicuously, traditional culture also plays crucial role in social and ethics.

In addition, man’s ideas and values are indispensable to comprehensively and profoundly apprehend social custom and ethics on account that people are the most ingenious living beings in the earth. Technologies can change our aesthetics, so we frequently design our costume; but technologies will give up to our values to cover up our private parts. Technologies could strengthen our weapon equip, and also can make the people more aggressive; but technologies can not change the desire which is chase peace. Similarly, technologies can help our life more convenient, can save our labor force; but they cannot prevent people from working hard. These are technologies which have certain limitation in social customs and ethics for the reason that they cannot change the personal responsibility, self-discipline, the belief in the principles of liberty, and so on.

In summary, given the reasons mentioned above, we may safely come to the conclusion that technologies can influence society customs and ethics to a certain extent, but they cannot touch every aspect for the reason that traditional culture as well as human’s ideas and values can also deeply explain society customs and ethics. Only through comprehensive and profound analysis of traditional culture, people’s ideas and values, and the development of society, can we really apprehend the society custom and ethics.
