TOPIC: ARGUMENT167 - A folk remedy* for insomnia, the scent in lavender flowers, has now been proved effective. In a recent study, 30 volunteers with chronic insomnia slept each night for three weeks on lavender-scented pillows in a controlled room where their sleep was monitored. During the first week, volunteers continued to take their usual sleeping medication. They slept soundly but wakened feeling tired. During the second week, the volunteers discontinued their medication. As a result, they slept less soundly than the previous week and felt even more tired. During the third week, the volunteers slept longer and more soundly than in the previous two weeks. This shows that over a short period of time lavender cures insomnia.

*A folk remedy is usually a plant-based form of treatment common to traditional forms of medicine, ones that developed before the advent of modern medical services and technology.

Syllabus:
B1 未证明真的睡得好了
B2 未证明睡眠提高因为Lavender
B3 study代表性有限

In this argument, the conclusion that lavender can cure insomnia over a short period of time, rest on a study that 30 volunteers who are confused by insomnia can sleep long and soundly in the third week of the study. However, circumspect scrutiny to the ratiocination of the arguer reveals that the arguer commits several logical fallacies, which render the argument unpersuasive.

To begin with, the claim that the insomnia of the 30 patients was cured in the third week of the study is lack of evidence. The mere fact that they slept longer and soundly than the prior two weeks is insufficient to prove the claim. The arguer does not provide comparison between the sleep of these people in the third week and the sleep with normal people. It is entirely possible that the situation of their sleep is still very bad. As we informed, the sleep of the prior two weeks is wretched, so that the sleep which is longer than the previous two weeks could be not enough as well. Thus without additional evidence to support the claim that these people sleep as well as the normal people in the third week, it is too hasty to claim that the insomnia was cured.

Additionally, even assuming that these 30 volunteers' sleep was improved in the third week, it is presumptuous to assert that it is the lavender cures the insomnia. The arguer overlooks other factors which could affect the sleep of these volunteers. It is entirely possible that these people became more familiar with the controlled so that they could sleep better after the previous two weeks when they cannot sleep deeply because of nervous to the environment. It is equally possible that it is the tiredness of the second week, during which they cannot sleep, made them sleep longer and soundly in the third week. Unless considering and ruling out these factors, the arguer cannot confidently assert that it is the lavender cures insomnia of these 30 volunteers.

Finally, even if we concede that the lavender indeed affect during this study, the result of the study is still untenable. For an accurate study, sufficient respondents are necessary. However, there were only 30 volunteers took part in the study; this number can be only a small portion of all people who bear insomnia. In common sense, the smaller the portion is, the less the representative the study is. Perhaps the other patients' sleep could get nothing improvement from the cure of lavender. Consequently, until much more volunteers participate in the study, the result of which is invalid.

Taken together, fallacies mentioned above make the argument unreasonable and groundless. To bolster the argument, the arguer needs to present a study with sufficient volunteers, and he must prove that the volunteers really can sleep well as normal people, excluding the other factors which could enhance the quality of sleep.
