TOPIC: ARGUMENT53 - Thirteen years ago, researchers studied a group of 25 infants who showed
signs of mild distress when exposed to unfamiliar stimuli such as an unusual odor or a tape
recording of an unknown voice. They discovered that these infants were more likely than other
infants to have been conceived in early autumn, a time when their mothers' production of
melatonin-a hormone known to affect some brain functions-would naturally increase in response
to decreased daylight. In a follow-up study conducted earlier this year, more than half of these
children-now teenagers-who had shown signs of distress identified themselves as shy. Clearly,
increased levels of melatonin before birth cause shyness during infancy and this shyness continues into later life.
WORDS: 378          TIME: 00:33:54

In the argument, the author makes the conclusion that increased level of melationin before birth cause
shyness during infancy and shyness continues into later life. To bolster his view, he points out the results
of  one study which was made thirteen years ago and the another follow-up study earlier in this year .Based
on unfounded assumptions and irrational evidence, the aurger's conclusion is specious which suffer from several
logical mistakes.

First of all, the author makes his unconvincing conclusion on a assumption that the melatonin has a real effect
on the infants. It is entirely possible that many others factors are attributable to the infants' mild distress.
The two studies don not give more information about the real function about the melatonin such as the time and extent
the melatonin acts. Moreover, the hormone may only exert an influence on the conceived women rather than their infants.
Without considering this issue, I am still specious of the author's conclusion.

Secondly ,it is hard to say that the signs of mild distress does necessarily mean the shyness. The infants' being
exposed to unfamiliar stimuli  or a tape recording of an unknown voice may result in some physical discomfort rather
than the shyness. Identifying the signs of shyness is a hard and complex problem in itself. The author gives no
information about the standards used to identify the shyness. Thus it may not ensue effectively that the result of
the study is correct and convincing. Without making sure the authenticity of the study, I can not be convinced that
the author's conclusion is plausible.

Thirdly, even though there is some relativity between the melatonin and the shyness, it is too hasty to draw the
conclusion that the shyness continues into later life. The surrounding circumstances have a great effect on the
development of the infants' character. Many other reasons such as the different living backgrounds, the various
local traditional values and the diverse economic levels can be attributed to building up the infant's characters.
Unless supplying more detailed information about the infant's growth ,I are not bewildered by the author's false
view.

To sum up, the author's conclusion is unfounded and illogical. In order to make the conclusion more cogent, the
author should give more information about the effect of the melatonin, the exact standard used to identify the
shyness and the surrounding circumstances where the infants grow up.
